Road & Track’s First Supercar Drag Race

The Lingenfelter Corvette was one of six high performance supercars tested at a California Naval Air station on Memorial Day weekend.  This was no field of lightweights!  Facing competition for the world’s fastest 0-200 mph in a stock or modified vehicle, running on DOT tires, were: Lamborghini Murcielago, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Ruf Rt 12 Porsche Turbo, Lingenfelter Corvette, Bugatti Veyron 16.4, and Hennessey Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper.

You can read the fascinating details of the results in September’s Road & Track, now in homes and offices everywhere.  The story can also be enjoyed on-line.

The vehicles, shown in a group shot below, finished worst to best in the order listed in the first paragraph.  If you want Corvette to be best, we’re going to have to find more than 880 horsepower to go against the 1000 plus hp of Bugatti and Viper.

With all due respect, using the acceleration time from 0-200 mph as any sort of substantive criteria for how good a car is (or isn’t), is like determining which fighter plane is the best plane, looking only at its ability to fly fast in a straight line. A MIG-25 Foxbat is at least 300 MPH faster than an F-15 Eagle, at least 700 MPH faster than an F-16 or F-18. Be that as it may, a MIG-25 wouldn’t dream of getting in a dogfight with any of these planes, not in a million years.

The 1001 HP Bugatti Veyron is nothing more than an idea, and a white elephant at that; very much like the Foxbat. Try getting its oil changed at Jiffy Lube, or getting it tuned up at a dealership. It has no basis in the real world. There isn’t another car in this lineup that comes remotely close to the bang-for-the-buck of the Corvette, Lingenfelter or otherwise. But you already knew that. That would explain the 0-200 MPH criteria; it’s one of the few areas where these other cars have a prayer of outdoing the Corvette. BTW, speaking of 0-200 MPH, where are the McLaren F1, the Saleen S7, the Ford GT and the Ferrari Enzo in this equation?
