Round or Square Taillights?

Love 'em or hate 'em?

Seems the C7 and new Z06 taillights continue to spark lively discussions among Corvette lovers. Some sadly say those square-ish taillights broke from Corvette rounded-taillight tradition and look too much like those of a Camaro. Other embrace the square pairings as part of the C7's advanced design and technology refresh.

So which side are you on?

taillightsThe four taillights have been either round or rounded for the majority of the Corvette’s history and are also one of the most recognizable features of the Corvette. The C7 has received much praise for its technology, handling characteristics, and design, but the debate among enthusiasts has been whether or not moving away from the round taillight configuration was a good idea. The new configuration still has four lights, but it's the shape and resemblance they have with the taillights of the Camaro that has sparked such a lively debate.

One Corvette owner commented, “At first I did not like them, especially when word leaked out they came from the Camaro, but they have grown on me.”

1959 2Another Corvette enthusiast stated, “I really love the rest of the car, but the back is all wrong.”

One fan sarcastically referenced the 1959 model, saying, “How could they EVER consider taillights that aren't round? Oh, the horror!”

Others commented that many of the people complaining are just resistant to change, while some who spoke out against the new design said that they thought the rear end was just plain ugly. Either way, anytime you change the design of a classic car, there are going to be a lot of different reactions. There is no denying that the C7 is a big step for Corvette, regardless of whether the taillights are round or square.

GM Design Director, Tom Peters, stated, “We wanted something that was an integrated, duel element that worked well with the sculpture and took full advantage of the technology and the functionality.” Peters talks more about the taillight design of the 2014 Corvette Stingray in this video and how he believes this new design will stand the test of time.

What are your thoughts? Was this a step in the wrong direction or did this decision give Corvette the fresh look it needed?

I had a problem with the taillights at first. The more I saw them, the more I liked the integration with the lines of the C-7. I own a C-7 Vert, and love it.

If you look at the 2014 taillight design it looks too much like the new Chevrolet taillight design that’s on all the models. They’ve gotten away from the unique styling that represents Corvette. If you have a unique vehicle in your lineup keep it that way. The way it looks to me is that when they designed the car, they got to the back end and just ran out of time with the design. Look what they’ve done with the new Camaro, they’ve changed the taillight design which now looks a lot better. I’ve owned 7 Corvette’s and still own three, 1991, 2006, and a 2008 Z06.

    It’s the new Corvette/Camaro hybrid.
