New Goodyear Tires for 2011 Z06

2011 Corvette Z06 TiresDetails are finally surfacing about the 2011 Corvette Z06.  While not the most exciting news or details, the tires are important and the first major announcement we have.

“Street-refined, but track-capable.” That’s exactly what Goodyear had in mind when factory fitting their latest Ultra-High Performance Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires for the 2011 Corvette Z06.

Bob Toth, Goodyear's director of new products, believes the multiple facets of the tire are important when fitting for the Corvette. The directional tread design helps enhance the dry cornering grip while even the tire’s style and lettering is important in giving the overall high performance appearance.

"The new Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 is positioned as a race-inspired, ultra-high performance dry traction tire for select supercars. With a left-side, right-side specific tread design, it offers superb dry traction and precise handling, complementing both the performance and appearance of sports cars," Toth said.

Now after multiple road course tests throughout North America, the tires will be available this summer in two run-flat sizes: P275/35ZR18 and P325/30ZR19.

Pause and Play Radio

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I am listening to a program or song on the radio that I'm really enjoying and either get a phone call, stop for gas, or the like and have to miss a portion or all of what I'm listening to.  For a few years, satellite radio providers have given customers that option with their devices they sell, but the option has yet to be introduced, built in to GM radios.

We don't have to wait any longer.  Certain GM vehicles offer a Pause and Play Radio feature, which saves up to 20-minutes of audio from a radio (including XM radio) on a vehicle’s hard drive. The best part – this radio save feature can even be activated when the vehicle is turned off!

Now in addition to the certain handful of GM vehicles that offer Pause and Play Radio, GM recently announced this radio feature would also become available on lower-end vehicles as well.  This announcement we find interesting, considering they have higher-end vehicles such as the Corvette lacking the latest, greatest options.

After first debuting on the Cadillac CTS, the feature has been available on the Buick LaCrosse, Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX. And now, the Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Regal will begin to offer it too. Others suggest GM will continue to expand this feature onto other vehicles eventually.

Maybe next year’s Corvette will make the cut! If not then, maybe with the release of the Corvette C7 – that is if it doesn’t already come with better radio features!

Stay tuned as we update you on the next batch of GM vehicles that will offer Pause and Play Radio.

Build Your Own Engine?

Tom Read from GM's Advanced Powertrain Technology Communications recently stated, "We are considering the program".

What’s this program that he speaks of? Well, it will allow Corvette ZR1 buyers to build their very own LS9 V8 638 horsepower engine!

So now, in addition to employing 38 skilled builders at the Wixom, Mich. Performance Build Center to personally oversee and construct 45 LS9 engines each week, GM may present this same opportunity to customers who purchase their own ZR1. I’m afraid watching your Corvette come off the production line has now been replaced with building your own engine.

Pretty cool, if you ask us.

What do you think of this opportunity if GM comes through with approving it? Would you want to take part? The first hurdle you’d have to face, of course, would be the purchase of your $100,000 baby.

Check out the video after the jump.

Corvette Recall Forthcoming

GM has alerted dealers today of an upcoming safety recall for Corvette owners.  Here are the details of what vehicles are involved and what you can expect.

The recall will include certain 2005-2007 Corvettes equipped with a removable roof and 2006-2007 Corvette Z06's.  This includes some 22,000 Corvettes!

Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the adhesive between the roof panel and the frame may separate.  If there is a partial separation, the occupant may notice one or more symptoms, such as a snapping noise when driving over bumps, wind noise, poor roof panel fit, roof panel movement/bounce when a door or hatch is closed, or a water leak in the headliner.  If there is a complete separation, the roof panel may detach from the vehicle.  If this were to occur while the vehicle was being driven, it could strike a following vehicle and cause injury and/or property damage.

To correct the problem, dealers will install a newly designed roof panel.  Right now GM is waiting on suppliers to obtain the required parts and when a sufficent number has been obtained, customer notification will begin.

Dealers do not know which specific vehicles are involved, nor can they perform the recall before the recall has been officially launched.

As always, any safety recall is done free of charge for the customer.  Stay tuned to CorvetteBlog for updated information when we have it.

Navigation Information? Beware!

Many Corvette owners have chosen to have Navigation installed in their Corvette by the factory, while some others have chosen to go the cheaper route and use a portable GPS unit.  Either way, if you're storing information in the navigation (like any of us normally would), beware.

Two metro Detroit robbers were recently nabbed for stealing GPS and garage openers from unlocked vehicles in 17 lower Michigan locations.

Just think… Those two items alone gives strangers FULL access to your house! The GPS is likely programmed with your home directions while your garage door opener will simply open your house!

Now you know. So be one step ahead of those 23-year old robbers. Program your home location as the local McDonald’s – or anywhere that’s miles away from your garage!  Coming from someone who has had their car stolen, I highly recommend this simple change to protect yourself and your family.

Nitrous-added C6 Explodes

Some Corvette enthusiasts just can’t seem to get enough.

For instance, the owner of this beautiful white C6 Corvette likely felt a need to impress his crowd of roaring fans. So, he made a simple (yet stupid) adjustment to his ‘Vette. He added a Nitrous Oxide System (NOS).

And look what happens… Don’t ruin your ‘Vette too. Be smart.  Check out the video after the jump.

Click here for NOS FAQs to consider before you repeat this dummy.

The Grand Sport 2010 Explained

2010 Corvette Grand SportYes, you probably are more than aware, but after much hype, the Corvette Grand Sport is back!

Customization is key in the new 2010 model. Eight exterior colors, four rear-fender hues and the ultimate choice of coupe or convertible are all major decisions upon initial purchase.

The Grand Sport falls in between the base ‘Vette and the Z06. A stiffened suspension and LS3 engine allow the Grand Sport to output 430 horsepower. A whole new perspective is brought to the vehicle’s brake system. The brakes are cross-drilled and upsized at 14.0 inches in the front and 13.4 inches in the rear.

If you prefer to take on the manual coupe, the vehicle’s features include a rear-mounted battery, a dry-sump oil system, differential cooler and a launch-control program to improve acceleration.

General Motors promises to manufacture as many as possible to keep up with the consumer demand. Be sure to shop with CorvetteBlog and George Matick Chevrolet for your next Grand Sport!

2010 Corvette Grand Sport Is Hot!

Without a doubt, the Grand Sport is the preferred model for those purchasing a new Corvette for the 2010 model year!  So, what is it about the Grand Sport that draws the customers?

I think the answers to this question are easy.  They are Looks and Choices.

I say Looks, because for the first time, the Corvette buyer can get that beautiful wide body look, previously available only to the buyer of the Z06 or the ZR1.  You have just got to love those gills!

And, I say Choices because you can have these desirable looks in a Convertible, as well as in a Coupe!  In addition, you can have the 6-Speed Paddle-Shift Automatic Transmission or the 6-Speed Manual.  Yes, you have new choices in this year's Corvette line!

Scott Burgess of the Detroit News was one of many auto writers to pick up on these qualities, and write about them.  Scott is spot on, as usual.

2010 Corvette Grand Sport LS3 Dry Sump Lubrication System Video

We came across this great video featuring John Rydzewski, the Assistant Chief Engineer for Small-Block Passenger Car Engines at GM showing off the 2010 Grand Sport LS3 Dry Sump Lubrication System.  We have been fielding a lot of calls and emails from our readers about the engine, how it works and the features included.  The engines are built just down the road from us here in Wixom, Michigan and are signed and hand built by American workers.

To note though is that these engines are only available on the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport coupes with manual transmissions.  They are not available on Grand Sport Convertibles or with automatic transmissions.

Sit back, relax and enjoy...

  • 2010 Corvettes:  The first is option 70U the Torch Red exterior color option.  It is a new color introduction and they are ramping it up.  Only 20% of available orders will be able to order Torch Red.  The other constraint is for any 3LTs or 4LTs ordered with the base radio US8.  This is pending an Engineering Validation and constitutes only 5% of available orders nationally.

  • 2010 Corvette Z06:  There is only 1 constraint to report.  70U Torch Red is being ramped up, again, only 20% of orders available nationally to choose Torch Red.
  • 2010 Corvette ZR1:  There are now only 2 color constraints to report.  10U Artic White is now available to order.  70U Torch Red constraint of only 20% nationally available, and 89U Crystal Red are both new to the ZR1 and are being ramped up.  Crystal Red has only 5% of orders available to place.

Looks Can Be Deceiving... Even On a Corvette

Techco, an aftermarket company based in Anaheim, is known for adding their “special touches” to Chrysler LX and Ford Mustang platforms.

Now, it’s Chevrolet Corvette’s turn…

Techco recently got their hands on a new C6 Corvette, adding on a reverse-revolution twin-screw supercharger system. This baby fit right underneath the hood with no adjustments to the body needed. The supercharger’s features include an 8-rib drive system, dual A-Frame intercooler system, high-volume fuel rails with 54 lb/hr injectors, which all allow the C6 to perform with:

  • 600 horsepower
  • 535 lb.-ft. torque
  • 6 pounds of boost
  • 3.0-liter displacement

The price? You may ask… only $8,500. Not bad! And even though you can’t see this monster lurking underneath the hood, just a slight touch of the gas pedal will tell a different story. So watch out!

For more details on the supercharger system, click here.

Becoming Tire Savvy

A tire is a tire, right?  Wrong.  Many consumers lack pertinent information about how a tire can improve a vehicle’s performance and potentially reduce fuel costs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to change this and educate consumers during their next tire purchase.

The NHTSA has proposed that tires come equipped with removable labels, explaining that individual tire’s fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas rating, safety (wet traction), and durability (tread wear).

Purchase a better quality tire, save gas costs, and remain eco-friendly… we like!  Of course Corvette tires are certainly specialized and not like other tires out there and it will be interesting to see how they are rated.

The proposal is still awaiting approval by the end of the year. For more information, visit www.safercar.gov. Would you base your next tire purchase off such a label? What do you think?

NHTSA Investigating Corvettes

The New York Times is reporting today that the National Highway Traffic Safety Admistration has stepped us safety investigations related to three specific models, one of them being the Chevrolet Corvette.

Specific to the Corvette investigation, they are looking at about 48,000 Vettes from 2005 and 2006 model years.  Some owners had claimed that the stability control system malfunctioned causing a sudden and inappropriate braking action without illumination of the brake lights, causing the vehicle to swerve left or right.

Currently there is no announcement from GM on any specific recall related to this problem.  Right now it seems like the NHTSA is checking everything out and we should hear more soon.  Any Corvette-specific recall information can ALWAYS be found on CorvetteBlog.  Stay tuned.

OnStar Announces Automatic Location Identification

GM's OnStarEvery Corvette that's produced comes equipped with OnStar, all with 1 year of service free.   We've often discussed the many benefits of Onstar, but every year something comes out that makes it even better.

The greatest benefit of OnStar is having this satellite system automatically track, notify, and direct emergency services to the site of an accident. You don't realize how valuable this is until you need it, and especially if you can't reach a phone or are seriously injured.  As good as it is now, recent improvements have been made to OnStar’s accident approach.

The sequential bullet points below will help identify OnStar’s recent changes.

The old OnStar:

  • Accident
  • OnStar Notified via Satellite
  • OnStar Report Detailed Description to Nearby Emergency Services

The new OnStar:

  • Accident
  • OnStar Automatically Send Longitudinal/Latitudinal Coordinates to 911 Center

So you can see, one step has been removed from the process and better coordinates have been created. OnStar’s newest addition of the Automatic Location Identification (ALI) system will allocate direct coordinates to available help with nearly ZERO chance for error.

You can visit OnStar.com for more information or to upgrade or purchase your subscription.

2010 Corvette Grand Sport Details

2010 Corvette Grand SportThe hottest topic on CorvetteBlog right now is the 2010 Corvette, and rightfully so.  The specific interest has been in the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport.  We have all the details you need about the hottest addition to the Corvette family.

Let's go over some of what we know.  First of all, the Grand Sport will be available in both coupe and convertible, in every trim level (1LT, 2LT, 3LT, and 4LT). The most defining aspect of the Grand Sport has to be it's aggressive look and wider track than the current C6.  It will have a unique fender design and the Grand Sport badge will appear in the cove.  There will be a front splitter and tall rear spoiler.

The Grand Sport offers a Heritage package with fender hash mark stripes (4 stripe colors) and special two-tone seats with "Grand Sport" embroidery as an available option.  Every exterior and interior color will be available to order.

Technically speaking, the Grand Sport will have functional brake ducts and additional cooling.  It has larger 6-piston 14" front and 4-piston 13.4" rear brakes, both with silver painted calipers.  The manual Coupe version will have a Z52 dry sump package with a rear battery.

Now a little bit about the wheels and tires.  There will be three Grand Sport specific wheels:  Silver, Competition Gray and Chrome.  It will come with the wider sized Goodyear F1 supercar tires (275/35-18x9.5 and 325/30-19x12)

There are many benefits to the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport.  First, there is a greater lateral acceleration.  The standard is .92 g, the previous Z51 offered .98 g and the Grand Sport comes in at 1.0 g.  It gains 0.2 seconds in the 0-60 test versus standard Corvettes  (4.0 vs 4.2).  All of this and even 26 mpg highway rating vs 24 mpg for Z06.

Pricing has not been yet released, but when we have the details, we will immediately post it for you.  See the complete list of specifications after the jump.

If you are interested in custom ordering a 2010 Corvette Grand Sport, contact us at CorvetteBlog.  You can leave a comment, which will be kept private, or give us a call at (888) 875-0728.  We're here to help you with an easy online purchase experience and many delivery options.

Tweet with OnStar... Coming Soon!

OnStar & Twitter... Quite a CombinationTwitter. This new age social networking technology scares many, and seems to be what all of the news networks and even Oprah are trying to embrace and utilize.

HOWEVER, for those of you Corvette owners who have adopted the idea, I have wonderful news! Now instead of discreetly trying to Tweet from your Blackberry or iPhone on the drive home or while stuck in traffic, you can simply do so with OnStar!

Vehicles with OnStar already equipped will soon be able to send and receive hands-free Tweets through the voice-activating system.

We all can thank Andru Edwards, President of GearLive.com, for coming up with this revolutionary new streamline feature. It works by converting your voice messages into texts which can then be sent directly to your Twitter fan club.

Now, grab your keys and get to Tweetin’!  As a side note, CorvetteBlog will be launching a twitter stream very soon.  Stay tuned for more details!  Hell, we might even twitter from our Corvettes...

Customer Satisfaction Program Announced

Corvette ConvertibleThis morning Chevrolet announced a Customer Satisfaction Program for some 2008 and 2009 Corvette Convertibles.  This is a program similar to a recall but not as formal.  If you're having the problem, and have a vehicle that qualifies, you can have the repair done at no cost by installing a newly designed retainer bracket.  Here's the details...

Certain 2008 and 2009 model year Corvette manual or power roof Convertible vehicles may have a condition in which the fabric roof cover may begin to separate from its retainer bracket near the top edge of the windshield.  When the vehicle reaches speeds of approximately 100 mph or greater, the roof cover could begin to pull away from the retainer bracket and, depending on the speed of the vehicle and duration at that speed, could tear into the rear glass.  If this were to occur, the headliner would remain intact and the roof cover would not separate from the vheicle.

Vehicles Involved:  Only vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints are involved:

  • 2008 models from VIN breaks: 85117774 through 85135284
  • 2009 models from VIN breaks:  95100002 through 95112678

Dealers will confirm whether your vehicle is eligible for the repair, as not ALL vehicles will be eligible.  GM will send a letter to all customers that are included in this program and all repairs must be made before May 31st, 2010.

A copy of the letter can be found after the jump.

LS9 Motor's Cost: An Arm and Leg

LS9 Crate EngineAnd so it was announced…The infamous LS9 engine now comes as a crate motor!

This revelation was announced at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, better known as SEMA. Every year the Las Vegas SEMA Show is infamous for showcasing high numbers of quality automotive specialty products, both new and improved.

This LS9 engine announcement is so new that it is not even recognized as an available purchase on the GM Performance Parts website yet. But, I do wonder how many individuals would be willing to make such a purchase… A $21,000 purchase! Such a sticker price comes with the notion that this supercharged engine can potentially produce 630 horsepower! You can never have enough horsepower, but do you think the price for it in LS9 form is much too costly?

What do you think? We want to hear from you!  Also, you can click here for a detailed gallery of the engine and its components, a lot of fun to look through.

Callaway's Supercharged Vette

Supercharged Callaway CorvetteThe standard 6.2L V8 Corvette has recently seen an upgrade courtesy of Callaway Cars. Now in business for 20 years, this company specializes in creating “commercial value by providing driving enthusiasts with maximum satisfaction”. The new kit, available on the 2009 Corvettes, boosts the vehicle’s horsepower to 580hp. This amount of pure horsepower allows the vehicle to reach high speeds of up to 200 miles per hour!

The LS3 V8 Corvette even witnessed tremendous output with the addition of Callaway’s supercharged package. The vehicle was able to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in only 3.5 seconds. Better yet, the vehicle was able to make it across the quarter mile in only 11.2 seconds time, flying at speeds up to 124 miles per hour. Incredible!

For this $18,900 supercharge package, Callaway aims to improve the vehicle, while also improving overall customer satisfaction. Would you be willing to pay for this luxury for your ‘Vette? With constant improvements, there’s no doubt that this company will keep progressing forward. In fact, just recently they were able to open shop in Corona, California.

Anteros Steals Corvette Body Platform

AnterosAt November’s Los Angeles Auto Show, n2a Motors Inc. unveiled their latest model, the Anteros. The body style of this vehicle is rather unique, and takes on characteristics of multiple foreign produced vehicles. What makes this vehicle rather stunning is to know that it’s built directly off of a 2009 Corvette platform!

This month marked the initial beginning of Anteros deliveries to be shipped to their eager awaiting owners. The vehicle takes up to 12 weeks to build, and comes straight from a Corvette body. In fact, the first step requires the body panels of the Corvette to be removed before installing the Anteros’ special carbon-composite body! Installing this carbon-composite framework is a process indeed, taking up to 800 hours to complete!

Feel free to access the Anteros website by clicking here. Would you buy a $154,000 Anteros when you can purchase a 2009 Corvette?

With several modifications put into place, the Katech crew worked to improve the vehicle’s power-to-weight ratio, leaving the vehicle’s weight at 2,915 pounds. Jason Harding of Katech’s Performance part sales made the comment: “Lamborghini has its Gallardo Superleggera, Ferrari its F430 Scuderia and Dodge its Viper ACR. Now the Corvette Z06 has the ClubSport package from Katech Performance.”

Contrary Convenience?

CARTES & IDentification hosted their 23rd exhibition in Paris, which ran November 4th to November 6th. CARTES & IDentification is dedicated to securing consumers’ identity through the use of countless new innovative ways to pay on credit. Many companies, including automotive manufacturers, are able to gain critical insight into how to best serve their market simply by attending this event.

The purpose of such exhibition allows for potentially innovative ideas to turn into an existing reality. At the show this past week, BMW research groups and NXP Semiconductors teamed up to unveil a concept vehicle that uses a brand new key fob remote. This key remote can be used to lock and unlock the vehicle, pop the rear trunk, set off a panic alarm, and can EVEN be swiped as a personal credit card!!

With such device, no matter where you travel, whether to the grocery store or to work every morning, you will always have your credit card on you because that baby will also be crucial to starting your very own vehicle! Now, you may run into trouble when you come to a tollbooth and have to turn off your vehicle in order to swipe your payment. This remote is still in concept mode, however BMW has been seriously considering adding this function into their new line of vehicles.

What do you think? A brand new car remote/credit card concept… Good idea? Bad idea?  Should Corvette adopt this technology?

OnStar Prevents Car Theft... Just not on a Corvette

OnStarEver been in the helpless situation where your car was stolen, leaving you without your vehicle and any trace of finding who had unrightfully stolen it?  If you haven't consider yourself lucky, as yours truly has gone through the experience.

Or maybe you’ve seen the television show “Cops” where the episodes are infamous for criminals who hot-wire stolen vehicles and take them on a joy ride across the state, leaving numerous police vehicles in hot pursuit!

Well, in order to help prevent such criminal car theft activity, OnStar has recently introduced their latest Stolen Vehicle Slowdown system. This system is a communication tool used exclusively between the vehicle’s owner, the police, and the OnStar system. If a vehicle is stolen, the individual who owns the vehicle is to notify the police, who are then to alert OnStar. Using satellite technology, the system affects the vehicle’s power train and will actually decelerate the engine entirely until the stolen vehicle comes to a standstill. Brakes, turn signals, and steering will still allow the person in the driver seat to avoid any dangerous road or traffic situations.

Of course there are those who have no interest in the feature and think that "big brother" may go too far with this feature, but we couldn't feel more differently.  This option cannot only lower your insurance premiums but also help secure your investment.

The option for Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is for some reason not available on the 2009 Corvette, we hope and anticipate that GM will follow suit in rolling it out to the remainder of their OnStar equipped vehicles come next year.  We'd love to hear the rational behind leaving the Vette out of the roll out this year.

Does all of this sound too good to be true? Watch a demonstration video after the jump.

Birthing Center for Corvette LS7 & LS9 Engines

Last Thursday's 2008 GM Performance Build Center Open House is now history, but what an excellent opportunity it was to see the amazing engines that power both the Z06 and the ZR1 in production!   Whether this annual event is officially keyed to the timing of the Woodward Dream Cruise I know not, but it does provide a great chance for those in town for the best car show in the world to see the craftsmanship of these fabulous engines.

Photography was not allowed in the assembly area, but that was no problem as Popular Hot Rodding Magazine previously provided the pictures of what we saw.  My own photos in this blog focus on the exterior and public areas.  Check the video of the build process for extra insight, and then view the photos past the break.

Video of the Week: Putting Together the LS9 Engine

This week's Video of the Week is all about putting together the LS9 engine.  General Motors Performance Build Center is the heart of where the ZR1’s internal combustion engine is built. From a sneak-peak visit, Automobile Magazine was able to catch a video of the entire production phase for us.

It takes a total of four and a half hours to transform a standard block of aluminum into a supercharged LS9. Through the fast-forward magic of video formatting, you are able to check out a seven minute condensed version of the transformation.

Corvette Navigation - Time for an Update?

The Audi A8 MMI SystemHaving been around the C6 for a long time with it's Navigation system that now is 4 model years old, you have wonder when an update is coming?  Sure, the same NAV system is used in all Chevy and GMC models but it's just plain getting outdated.

We stumbled across the new Audi A8 and learned that it will come equipped with a new MMI computer system. If you’re familiar with Audis, they come installed with the button-and-knob interface, which has proven to be quite a success.  I assume the new MMI system must be more promising than their previous interface.  The new seven-inch TFT screen with 800x480 resolution is controlled by the use of a 8-position joystick.  I don't know if a joystick is the answer for the Corvette, but the simple graphical interface of this system is awesome.

The GPS maps can be seen through a 3D perspective, with topographical map coloration. There's also crossfading between screens.  Very cool! We’ll have to wait to hear how customers react to learning the new MMI system. If all goes well for Audi, don’t you think it’s about time for GM, now years behind, to update into a newer navigational system?

Finally Approved, Sirius XM Radio Begins

Sirius XMAs you may have recently read, the FCC has approved the merger between XM and Sirius Satellite Radio.  The merger approval was the longest in the history of the US - even longer than than the merger between Exxon and Mobil.

This is a very positive step forward for both companies and there are a number of benefits to Corvette owners and future customers.

Here are the key aspects to the merger:
  • Both companies have committed to protecting existing hardware well into the future. So, current GM/XM customers can continue to receive XM content on the radio in their Corvette.
  • The combined company has committed not to raise the retail price for its basic service packages and all the new packages described below for a period of 3 years. Notwithstanding this commitment, the company may pass through cost increases associated with the payment of new digital rights management fees after the first anniversary of the merger.

  • The combined company has committed to offer “Best of Both” programming in the near future. For XM customers, this means they will continue to receive their existing XM service and will be able to receive select Sirius programming as well.

  • Also in the near future, XM listeners will have the option of choosing programming packages such as “Mostly Music”, “News, Sports and Talk”, and “Discounted Family Friendly” bundles.

  • Finally, “A La Carte” programming options will be made available once new receivers can be developed. These channel options require new receivers that have not been developed yet.  For Chevy, this means it will take some time before the receivers can be developed and then installed into new models.  They are also investigating the possibility of developing service parts kits that will allow existing GM/XM customers to get access to “a la carte” packages. More information will be made available once we have a definitive plan established.
This really is a great move for XM subscribers.  Being a listener of both XM and Sirius, I have been looking forward to this approval for over a year now and am extremely excited about the possibilities it gives us at Chevy.

As more details on the merger come out, you can find them here at CorvetteBlog.com. print this article Posted By Ryan In Corvette Equipment | 0 Comments Permalink

New Single Line LPO Options for 2009 Corvettes

15-spoke Polished Wheel Options for CorvetteChevy has recently started a new program for dealers where they can order various accessories and add them on as "options" when configuring a vehicle.  The benefit of ordering upfront as opposed to adding later is that the accessory is on the invoice and is included in the MSRP.  This way there's no haggling or price negotiation about the particular accessory.  The accessories are installed by the dealer.

Here are the accessory options that you (or your dealer) can have added to your Corvette order:
  • VDN - Indoor Vehicle Cover
  • VJ5 - Outdoor Vehicle Cover
  • VDA - Mesh Package (includes side coves and grill)
  • VEB - Pedal Covers
  • 5V5 - Full Width Racing Spoiler
  • VFS - 18/19" 7 spoke Chrome Wheels
  • VEU - 18/19" 15 spoke Polished Wheels
The first week to order these single line items is this coming Thursday. print this article Posted By Ryan In 2009 Corvette Ordering , Corvette Equipment , Corvette News | 0 Comments Permalink

2009 Corvette Exterior Color Samples

2009 Corvette New Color Samples

By popular demand, we are posting sample colors of the 2 new Corvette colors for the 2009 model year, Silver Ice Metallic (17U) and Cyber Gray Metallic (57U).  Please note, we have scanned our color chip chart for you to see and the Cyber Gray comes out darker in our image than on the chart, so keep that in mind.  This is as good as we could do for all of you now, until Chevrolet releases some web-ready pictures, which we are watching for.

2008 Corvette Ordering Updates

2008 Corvette Indy Pace Car (Z4Z)While we don't normally post updates on ordering after publishing the Corvette Constraints for the week, we thought this information was worth updating you on as it was redistributed to dealers by Chevy's District Managers.  The updates are in regards to 2 different options:  The Z4Z Indy Pace Car and the 67U Machine Silver constraints.

The Z4Z Indy Pace Car replicas are still available for ordering.  When we saw the number of available units the past couple of weeks for dealers to order, we thought demand might be a little low.  Looks like we were right.  This week the ZAZ constraints are not protected.  This means that if a dealer has a Pace Car order waiting in their que but doesn't have the allocation during the initial ordering cycle, they can pick one up if another dealer passes on their allocation.  As a reminder, there are 500 replicas being built.

67U Machine Silver is now officially discontinued.  We had heard rumors and posted those thoughts in the past couple of weeks and it has now been confirmed.  They will replace Machine Silver in 2009 with two different silver color options.  One is called Blade Silver Metallic (17U) which is a lighter silver color resembling Machine Silver and the other is Cyber Gray Metallic (57U), a darker color silver/gray.

We are accepting deposits on 2009 Corvettes, which we will gladly order for you in either of those new colors or any color you desire, all at GM Supplier Pricing for our Corvette Blog readers, with national delivery.  Call us or comment back today for more details.

Distribution Details Announced for Limited Edition Z06: We Have At Least 1!

Corvette 427 Z06Great news!  We finally have some information on the distribution method Chevy has decided on for the recently announced 427 Limited Edition Z06.

The first 427's will be available to order tomorrow, March 6th.  Here's the kicker... Dealers with 27 or more total Corvette sales will be awarded at least one Z44.

We are one of the elite dealers that will have a 427 Z06 available tomorrow to order!  If you are interested in placing a deposit on the order we have coming available, call us immediately at (888) 875-0728 or leave a comment (kept private) and we will get you all the information you need.

There will be two DOSP cycles that will be open for ordering of the Z44 constraint:  the first being tomorrow and the second being March 20th.

Also to note is that the Z44 constraints will not be protected and no 427 Limited Edition pattern orders will be generated to fulfill allocations. Therefore, any Z44 constraints not utilized by the originally assigned dealer will be made available to any dealer with Z06 allocation during subsequent DOSP cycles.  That's extremely unlikely to happen.

Two Exciting New Corvette Options Coming Soon

CorvetteBlog is ahead of the curve on this one: two as yet unannounced options are coming for new 2008 Corvettes!

The first is coded VPK and described as the Limited Personalization Exterior Package.  The package includes: screen mesh package, body color rear license plate frame, underhood blanket and lamp kit, exterior graphics, vehicle cover, racing C6 or Z06 design spoiler, and chrome or body color door handles.

The second package is coded VPL, is described as the Limited Personalization Ultimate Package, and includes everything in VPK plus either seven spoke chrome or fifteen spoke polished wheels.

Still unknown is the pricing, the time of availability, and what some of these items actually look like.  The good news is that the packages are described on Chevrolet dealer accessible websites, so answers should be coming soon.

Please stand by.  CorvetteBlog will break further news as it comes.

Corvette Run-Flat Tires

CorvetteBlog continues to be amazed at Run-Flat Tire Technology.  Documents received recently speak of the fantastic nature of these tires.  For example: "Run-flat tires perform so well without any air that a Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) is used to alert you if a tire has lost pressure."

Consider this caution: "When the low tire warning light is displayed on the instrument panel cluster, your vehicle's handling capabilities will be reduced during severe maneuvers.  If you drive too fast, you could lose control of your vehicle.  You or others could be injured.  Do not drive over 55 mph (90 km/h) when the low tire warning light is displayed.  Drive cautiously and check your tire pressures as soon as you can" (emphasis ours).

Sure, it is presented as a caution, but they are saying in this official document (#1911402) that with little or no air one should not drive faster than 55mph!  Is that not incredible?

CorvetteBlog was honored to be selected recently to receive advance notification of a great new OnStar feature coming to many OnStar equipped Chevrolets in 2009: Stolen Vehicle Slowdown!  OnStar has relentlessly progressed from the early days when about all you could do was report an accident.

Generation 8 OnStar will enable responding emergency entities (like the state police) to actually remotely deactivate fuel to the powertrain, and force a thief to slow down.  Functionally, it is exactly as though the accelerator has been disconnected.  Steering and braking systems are not affected.  The thief is forced to pull over, and unable to propel the vehicle away from the pursuers!

We've driven it.  We've seen it.  It really works!

Exhaust System Dials Down Drone on Corvettes

If the sound of your Corvette is important to you, and if you would appreciate a few more ponies, you might want to consider what is generally known as a "cat-back" exhaust system.  Not only does such a system increase power, but it enhances the way the vehicle sounds -- or in the case of the newest systems from Corsa Performance, the way it doesn't sound.

Corsa has been doing exhaust enhancement for Corvette since 1998, and their patented Reflective Sound Canceling (RSC) technology has been welcomed by many Corvette enthusiasts.  Corsa shows up at all of the big Corvette shows (like Bloomington Gold, Corvettes at Carlisle, Corvette Funfest) to demonstrate the improvements and to do installations on the spot.

Larry Edsall's report on the Corsa system is covered in yesterday Detroit News, but the best source of additional information would be Corsa Performance itself.

Lewis Five Motorsports Offers Exposed Headlights for C5 Corvette

Lewis Five Motorsports was one of the many vendors I saw this past Saturday at America's Corvette Show in Warren, Michigan.  They are manufacturers of a growing number of modifications to the C5 CorvetteScott Lewis and some of his amiable family (pictured) showed me two products that I expect will find quite a market.

First, exposed headlights for the C5 give the car that C5.R racecar look.  They are available with the option of high-intensity discharge.  L5 Motorsports can paint to match your car and install, but if you're not in Michigan, you can have them painted (or not) and shipped for your own installation.

A Man With a Corvette Addiction

What do you call a man who eats, sleeps, and vacations with Corvette parts?  One such man is Terry, and he confesses to a Corvette addiction.

Since as a youth he started bringing parts car after parts car to his parent's home, the evidence of addiction has been clear.  When others would go to the lake house, or the shore, or Disney World, Terry would go to cars shows, looking to hawk Corvette fuel injector kits or wheel covers.

Terry's niche is Corvettes and other Chevies from the 50's through the 70's.  If you need parts related to 1957-1965 Corvette fuel injection, if you're looking for RPO 276 Corvette wheel covers from that same era, or thermostat housings, you need to call Terry.  Thermostat housings?  Don't get him started!  He calls himself the thermostat "housing authority".

Does humility play a part in his expertise for "early, hard to find" Corvette parts?  A favorite saying: "I don't know it all, but I want to.  Teach me.  I'm all ears."

Sadly, he has no website.  Call Terry at 586/996-1967.

Anteros Supercar Built on Corvette C6 Chassis

Corvette Blog has been fascinated with the wide range of adaptations to the Corvette C5 and C6 chassis the creative geniuses of this world have made.  The August 2007 print (page 29) and on-line issues of Road & Track treat us to one more of these variations: the Anteros Supercar.

The originator of this vehicle, Roger Hector, explains that "The design concept was to capture some of the classic 1960s' sports-car DNA and blend it into a modern, original design for the C6".  Fabrication will be handled by HST Inc. in Tijuana, Mexico.  A Magnuson supercharger will boost the horsepower of the LS2 engine to 550hp.  Price is $110,000, including the original C6.

Callaway C16 Speedster to Join Coupe and Cabrio

News about the upcoming reveal of the alluring Callaway C16 Corvette Speedster is all over the Internet except at the Callaway website itself.

According to AutoBlog, the C16 model line will grow from two models to three in mid-August.  It is likely appropriate then that the new drophead coupe will debut at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the poshest car show on the continent.

As with the other models, the Speedster is powered by a supercharged and intercooled 6.2L Corvette LS2 V8, producing 700 horsepower and 660 ft-lbs. of torque.  That appears to be about 84 horsepower more than one can order for a C16 Coupe or Cabrio.  0-60 takes just 3.2 seconds and the top speed is 210mph.  As AutoBlog suggests, going that fast with no windshield would be an adventure, for sure.

Callaway has incorporated some bumps behind the extra tall headrests, as well, which hopefully support the car's weight should you find yourself upside down on the tarmac.  The C16 Speedster will cost $305,000 when it goes on sale in the fall.

Corvettes at the Summit, Part IV

To whom would you turn for fiberglass or rolled composite panels to repair your Corvette?

Gary Everett from American Custom Industries in Sylvania, Ohio was present with an extensive display at the Corvettes at the Summit event this past Saturday.  ACI specializes in hoods, fenders, and other fiberglass / molded composite panels for 1963 - 2008 Corvettes.

Gary made a point that their fabrication technique is "hand laid" rather than "press molded" so the quality is enhanced.  ACI is likely the company you need!  Visit their website for all the helpful details if you are in need or repair or restoration.

The Hydra-Matic is shown at the top.

The Tremec is below.

2008 Corvette Shifter Knob Change

Yesterday Rick Conti reported that the aluminum shifter knob on the 2008 Manual Transmission-ed Corvette has a different pattern.

In fact, the same is true of Automatic Transmission-ed Corvettes.  The 2007 aluminum has a pattern.  The 2008 has smooth unpatterned aluminum.  I think the look overall is better for 2008.

This is one of the many changes we reported back on April 30 in the blog "Corvette Museum Announces 2008 Corvette".

Detachable C2 and C3 Corvette Hood Hinges

I personally have never owned a C2 or C3 Corvette.  Wished I had, but haven't.  Because of this clear lack of personal experience, I did not know (before 2007 Bloomington Gold) that working on the front end of a 1963-82 Corvette was so difficult!

If this has been a challenge for you, New Hampshire's American Freedom Products has the solution for you.  Detachable hood hinges make it a cinch to access headlight mechanisms, do radiator work, or reach the horn for repair.

The hood removes easily without removing the hood hinge bolts, so fit and gap tolerances are not jeopardized.  Also available is a hood lift harness to make hood removal a single person process.

Convertible Tops for Corvettes

Another of the hundreds of suppliers to classic Corvette enthusiasts present at Bloomington Gold was Coffman Corvette.  Coffman's focus is on convertible tops for Corvettes built from 1956 into the 1970's.

Pam and Ernie construct or fabricate all their Corvette parts in Mansfield, Ohio:  frames, tops, weatherstripping, and mounting hardware.  Rhonda was doing a great job running the "just the basics" display "store" and answering questions at Bloomington.

Information on all their offerings, including intake manifolds, radiator supports, and radiator brackets, can be found at their website.

Corvette Inspired Cheetah Lives On

Bill Thomas' Corvette-based 1965 Cheetah is back!  I know, I know: you may not have even missed it!

One of the amazing vehicles I saw at the recent Bloomington Gold Show was the 2007 version of the 1965 Cheetah.  When I met the on-site representative, Ron Keck, I just had to ask: what's a Cheetah?

Ron explained that the Cheetah is a safety-enhanced continuation of the original vehicle, not a replica.  The original vehicles were authorized by Chevrolet to battle the Cobra in the early 1960's, but funding for the program was pulled when just a couple of dozen of these little spitfires had hit the race tracks.  They had torn up the racetracks in 1964 with eleven victories.

The first photo shows the original car parked in front of a 1959 Chevy wagon.

Top Gear Not Impressed with Ron Fellows Edition Corvette Z06

Under the title “Fellow’s Traveller,” Top Gear Magazine recently queried the wisdom of building the Ron Fellows Edition Corvette Z06. They feel the vehicle would be a “strong contender” for a position on a list of “pointless special edition cars.”

Apparently they barely (if at all) follow the GT1 racing world, in which Fellows has established himself as pre-eminent. While acknowledging his Canadian heritage, they treat everything American and Canadian as if we are “just the colonies.”

They describe as a “saving grace” the fact of the mind-blowing performance of the 7.0L Z06 engine, the 0-60mph time of 3.8 seconds, and top speed of 199mph. Well, at least they noticed!

Check out their little article. Don’t you think they are a little jaded?

Steve's Corvette Garage, a.k.a. Advanced Automotive Technologies

I call it Steve's Corvette Garage.  Yesterday, I was given a first class tour of Advanced Automotive Technologies in Rochester Hills, a couple dozen miles north of the world capital of the automobile, Detroit.  The building's exterior reveals nary a hint of the automotive delights inside!

I had previously blogged about one of Steve's products, the 50th Commemorative Edition Corvette.  Two of these beauties there were shipping later in the day, and another was nearly completed.  Others were earlier in the process.

Finding Your Corvette in the Midst of Hundreds

Suppose you are at a C5 Corvette event, and there are hundreds of other cars present.  You obviously know what your car looks like from a hundred feet, but you cannot see it for the crowd.

You pull out your remote key fob and tap the emergency button.  Nothing!  Again.  Nothing!

According to some investigators, for reasons beyond the comprehension of most of us, holding that key fob to your Adam's apple or skull will likely increase the range.  Please read on.

The Hackszine website attests this to be the case, and a link from there to RemCon substantiates the physics of the situation.  Try it; you may like it!

Vortech Supercharger Takes Corvette LS7 to 635HP

Today, someone who purchased a Viper body kit to begin the transformation of another Corvette to Vipette stardom is sacrificing the body on another eBay auction.

Corvette Restoration Parts

Suppose you are restoring a classic C1 Corvette, and you discover that you need a front engine mount cushion kit.  To whom do you turn?

Likewise, you need an oil filter for a first generation Corvette, but you want it to be exactly like the original black filter with white silk screening on it.  Where?

Perhaps it's a chrome plated rear view mirror for a 1959 Corvette.  Who has unique parts you can count on?

One source for many is Paragon Corvette Reproductions of Swartz Creek, Michigan, not far from Flint.  Complete on-line catalogs for C1, C2, and C3 Corvettes are available.

Where is the Spare Tire for Your Corvette?

One Corvette salesperson I know used to ask his customers during the course of his presentation where the spare tire was on a Corvette.  Some would look in the trunk area or under the rear end of the vehicle, and of course, find nothing.  They’d say, “I can’t find it. Where is it?’ He’d say, “At your Chevy dealer!”

It is an important question, of course, because every C6 Corvette has four unique tires.  The front tires are an inch smaller than those on the back, and all of the tires are unidirectional for safety and speed.  There is simply no place to store four tires in the vehicle.  It would be tough enough to carry them in a pickup truck!

So, what happens when a Corvette tire is damaged?  The owner can call 1-800-CHEV-USA for Roadside Assistance, of course.  But, in addition, run-flat tire technology makes it possible to actually drive that Corvette to service. The concept is that the sidewalls are considerably thicker and can be used for ride stability.  Consumer Reports recently presented a helpful summary of the technology on their website.  Check it out for all the details!

Also revealed are gorgeous new polished aluminum wheels.  You have to register to see the Digital Corvettes material, but it costs nothing and is well worth it.

No other 2008 tweaks have been revealed or announced at this point other than color.

Factory Five Provides Kit to Build Your Own Corvette Supercar

Purchasing the $19,900 kit and following the directions from Factory Five, the intrepid do-it-yourself-er can conceivably build a Corvette Z06 based supercar for less than $61,000!

According to Scott Lear in the May issue of Grassroots Motorsports, the kit is “designed to transform a C5 Corvette donor vehicle into a composite-bodied, mid-engined hyper exotic.” He describes the resultant product as “a performance monster, equal to or faster than the world’s best.”

Nashville Police Have Difficulty Spiking Corvette RunFlats

Nashville, Tennessee Police recently had difficulty apprehending a stolen red C6 Corvette because of its EMT. Extended Mobility Tires, affectionately called “run-flats,” are standard on every C6 Corvette. The Goodyear Tire website explains the technology.

Apparently the tires on the runaway Corvette were spiked three or four times to no avail. Eventually the DWI candidate rammed a Police Impala, but was still not captured without aid of a police dog.

Another Look at the CRC C5 Corvette

Classic Reflection Coachworks recently put the final touches on its retro-body kit for the C5 Corvette. The May issue of Motor Trend suggests that we definitely not consider this modification as a kit-car body simply added to the great underpinnings of a C5. It is, in fact, much more!

The body with the look of a 1962 Corvette convertible was created through extensive study and engineering. The unique body molds are made to be seamless to allow for vacuum-formed creation from Sprint CBS material. The lines are pleasing.

Ron Fellows Corvette Z06 Arrives at Dealership

Our parent dealership has just taken delivery of our Arctic White Ron Fellows Corvette Z06. And what a beautiful car this autographed #190 is (out of 399 total being built)!

It arrived in the place of honor behind the cab on the car carrier, safest there from bugs and flying debris. The vehicle had the typical clear stretchwrap on it, and it came with a trunk full of decals, the front splitter, the wheel hubs, etc.

Careful attention was given to prepare it for showroom display behind the stanchions, not too far away from our gorgeous Black and Victory Red Z06’s.

Of course, every Ron Fellows Z06 comes with metric gauging, so some feel that kilometers per hour and miles per liter are there to honor the Canadian roots of racing driver Ron Fellows. I haven’t checked, but the navigational radio probably calls out all the Tim Hortons restaurants across North America, eh?

BBS Gold-Line Corvette Wheels Add a Touch of Class

The BBS USA folks, known for their success in the highest categories of auto racing, have introduced a new product for the C6 Corvette: BBS Gold Line RS-GT Wheels.

According to a Detroit News story yesterday, by Larry Edsall, the BBS Gold wheels have to be good to justify their price -- $900 each for the RS978 front wheels and $1,290 a piece for the RS979 rears.

The new 'Vette wheels not only feature the characteristic BBS aesthetic design, but are two-piece and die-forged and were designed specifically to fit the Corvette -- to provide room for the car's large brake package. "The Corvette is the ideal showcase for BBS engineering expertise because of its amazing acceleration and grip," said Craig Donnelly, director of technical sales for the Braselton, Georgia based company.

C6 Corvette Aerodynamics Enhance Safety

When a Corvette can be driven (not necessarily legally) right out of the showroom and onto a highway at speeds over 180mph, the engineers and designers had better have given every thought to safety! And Corvette designers did!.

One of the amazing aspects of the C6 Corvette is in its anti-flight design.  Chief designer Tom Peters has been quoted as saying, “We looked to inspiration from modern jet fighters. The side profile brings to mind the silhouette of an F22 Raptor – angular and aggressive, but with just the right amount of curves.”  But it doesn't just look like it could fly! In many ways, if the C6 had wings, it could fly!

Those Amazing Carbon Fiber Corvette Z06 Front Fenders

The Corvette Z06 continues to amaze!

High speed, of course, is the product of many factors, not least of which is reduced weight.  Of course, that weight reduction must not be at the cost of strength!  One of the many areas where weight is effectively reduced in the Z06 is in the front fenders.  In fact, the carbon fiber technology that is used is beyond remarkable!

Borrowing an excellent article from High-Performance Composites Magazine, our good friends at the Corvette Action Center include a marvelous illustrated summary on their website of this functionality.  It is worthy of the reader's careful attention.

Callaway Corvette C16 Does 216 MPH!

Road & Track turns in this summary on the new Callaway Corvette C16: "we have no doubt there’s a market for this highly individualized, sharp-handling, meticulously outfitted supercar, one that tops out at a claimed 206 mph in anger but will still return 28 mpg when driven gently".

Regarding this Corvette's amazing velocity: "The flesh on your cheekbones ripples back toward your ears in a sort of g-induced perma-grin. Of course, this is second-nature to centrifuge-trained astronauts and rocket-sled test pilots, but this sort of acceleration is uncommon—and hugely addictive—in a road-going, street-licensed automobile".

Callaway Corvette Convertible

Corvette question for the day: how does the new Callaway Corvette convertible deal with the torque?

"Equipped with Callaway’s 560-hp supercharged 6.0-liter V8, the C16 Convertible is also available with an optional Performance Package that delivers 616 supercharged horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 582 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm."

For years, Chevrolet has stated that the Z06 would not be made available in convertible form because of the massive amounts of torque applied to the body under power.  Clearly weight reduction was, and is, important to the Z06 to enable "drive out of the showroom" speeds of over 200 mph, so a convertible's mechanisms would not help in this regard.  In addition, the upper part of the body cage also helps ameliorate the contortions a high torqued powerplant would otherwise provide.

Clearly, the Callaway C16 Convertible challenges this assumption.  And it is beautiful, too!

Boattail Speedster Body Now Available for Corvette

I love Corvettes.  That is, in part, why I write the Corvette Blog.  But, without question, one of my favorite museums in all the world is the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana.

Honestly, I have never had a traceable connection between these two diverse automotive interests.  Never, until this past Friday at the Detroit Autorama, that is!

There I saw this vehicle: a modern art deco speedster body dropped on a C5 Corvette.  The manufacturer/modifier is Deco Rides.  Here you have Corvette integrity, performance, and servicibility, with a body from a parallel universe.

Corvettes at Detroit Autorama Show - Part I

There were many beautiful Corvettes at the Detroit Autorama this past weekend!

One of my favorite Corvettes, without question, was the 789, manufactured by n2a Motors of Santa Ana, California.

The front of the vehicle resembles the 1957 full sized Chevrolet. The side resembles the 1958. The rear is all 1959 Impala. All of this is assembled on a C6 Corvette chassis. Honestly, it may not sound right on paper, but this vehicle is beautiful!

CorvetteBlog's OnStar Video Series - Part 4

The fourth and final installment of our OnStar Video Series is most certainly my favorite.  It's called "OnStar Command Center" and takes a look at OnStar's main center of operation in Detroit, Michigan.  Chet Huber, President of OnStar, walks us through the various aspects of the OnStar Command Center.

Staff at CorvetteBlog have gone to see the Command Center and let me be the first to tell you, this is exactly what it is like.  Very impressive and "NASA-like."  It really gave us a great appreciation for all that they are doing to monitor, assist and protect drivers.  The 911 information in the video is incredibly interesting and unique.

Remember, all Corvette owners that have OnStar as an option have their first year of OnStar service paid for complimentary.

You receive both audio and visual prompts (through the speaker system and Driver Information Center, respectively).  Remember, all Corvette owners that have OnStar as an option have their first year of OnStar service paid for complimentary.  You do get one route free, so try it out and if you want to add it to your service, it's just a few bucks more a month as part of the Directions and Connections plan.

Our second installment of our OnStar Video Series features the video "A Day in the Life."  This video shows the main reporting screen for OnStar services on a typical day.  It shows the entire US and where people are using OnStar, and for what purpose.

This video doesn't have sound, it's more of a watch the map fill up kind of piece, but still interesting to see the statistics behind OnStar and the actual areas of activity throughout the day.

Remember, the first year of service for Corvette customers equipped with OnStar is free!

CorvetteBlog's OnStar Video Series - Part 1

I've been thinking lately about how great OnStar is, and how so many recent Corvette owners have OnStar equipped vehicles.  Not everyone realizes all the components of those three buttons on your rear view mirror.  I'm not trying to sell you the service, just point out its high points that I believe Corvette owners would enjoy.

Over the next couple of days we'll be offering videos from OnStar about select parts of their service.  While yes, it isn't COMPLETELY Corvette related, it's still a great service to consider if you're looking to buy, or if you've not thought about it before and have it in your Corvette now.  Also, your first year of service is free!

The video series was produced in 2006, so it doesn't reference 2007 models, but 2007 Corvettes enjoy all of these same benefits.

Corvette LS2 One of Great Engines of All Time

In the Jan/Feb 2006 issue of Winding Road, road tester Bill Campbell described the standard 400hp Corvette LS2 engine as having a better response in the day-to-day world of driving than the 505hp LS7 engine of the Z06:

“The 6-liter LS2 feels a little stronger than the LS7 in the 2000 to 3500 rpm range where you so often find yourself on the street. Whether it is because the LS2 torque peak is slightly lower or because the Z06 has taller gearing doesn’t really matter. Let’s get this straight: the LS2 is one of the great engines of all time for practical street level torque, and the LS7 in the Z06 delivers about 95 percent of the feel of the LS2, but potential buyers, particularly those with C6 experience, should be prepared.”

I’m curious to know whether others feel the same. What is your experience? Post your comment below.

Corvette Conversions

Classic Reflection Coachworks of Lakewood, Washington wants to take your C5 Corvette and customize it to look like a 1962.

The appeal of such cars (beside the fact that you see them more in your dreams than on the street) is the opportunity to blend various styles and design cues together, to put excitement and fun back into the old familiar shapes, to haunt our thoughts with these wide-eyed round headlights and muscle-car curves once again.

Their handiwork is remarkable.  In the words of CRC: "This new automotive conversion transforms your C5 Corvette Roadster into a modern legend. It takes you back in time to a classic looking car, yet it has the safety, comfort and performance of America’s most desired sports car."

Guzzle Not!

Incredible as it seems, the Corvette has no gas guzzler tax.

Whether you drive the 6.0L (366 cubic inch) LS2 V8 with six speed manual and get 18mpg city / 28mpg highway, or with the six-speed paddle shifters and get 17 city/27 highway, there's no gas guzzler tax!

If your ride is the Z06, which of course comes with the 7.0L (427 cubic inch) LS7 V8 with six-speed manual, you get 16mpg / 26 highway.

Any way you splice it, that's a remarkable achievement!

Corvettes, Other Cars, and Electronics

I’m sure I'm not the only one to notice, but there are three huge consumer events occurring simultaneously this second week of January 2007: the North American International Auto Show (in my backyard here in Detroit), the International Consumer Electronics Show (in Las Vegas), and the Macworld Expo (in San Francisco). And they are more and more interrelated!

Everyone expects the automakers to be promoting electronics in their cars (like XM Radio and OnStar in our Corvettes), but would you be expecting to find automobiles, say, at the Las Vegas show?

But try this on: one electronics company actually has a car, the Kurrent, in the garage of its house-like exhibit at the CES! Why does this car rate presence at an electronic show? It's an electric car. To recharge it, you simply plug it in to any 110-volt wall plug, just like a toaster!
