Consumer Reports Rates Z06 "Most Fun to Drive"

Corvette Z06: Most Fun to Drive!Consumer Reports, everyone's favorite independent rating organization, came out with their annual "American Top Picks" list.  The criteria to be on the list includes them having reliability data for the car, stability control must be available and the crash tests have to be decent.

With those criteria met, the Corvette Z06 was named Most Fun Car to Drive.  it beat out many other qualified American rivals, and Consumer Reports gives us an idea why (although in a rather negative tone).  They say:

Fun to drive: The Corvette Z06 is an awesome car, but Corvette reliability is well-below average. The CTS could also qualify here, but again, no reliability data. Going down the list, the Mustang GT lacks ESC; we don’t have reliability data on the Dodge Viper; and the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky have subpar reliability. The Dodge Charger R/T V8 is reliable and fast, but its overly light steering feel keeps it from being truly fun to drive.

Our only other complaint about the article is how it starts off.  The tone seems to be that they only come out with this list because people email and correspond with them that buying American is important and a decision factor for many.  It would seem to me that while the list is a great idea, buying American is an even better idea.  There's something to be said about being impartial and independent, but its something else to go dogging the industry that built this country.

What's your take?  Let us know.  And did we also mention, we have 5 Z06's in stock now at GMS Pricing?  Call or write us for more details.

The Oscars & The Corvette

Sharon StoneWith this weekend being the weekend for the Oscars and all, why not a Corvette-related story to get us ready.

Sharon Stone is auctioning off her own 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray as part of Elton John's Academy Awards extravaganza.  She reports the vehicle is in mint condition and that this was the way she wanted to sell it.

The Stingray would normally fetch around $40,000 (according to the article), but Stone hopes to raise 3x as much for Elton John's Aids Foundation.  Check out the site for more information on the auction and what else is being showcased.

Deputy Clocked in a Corvette Doing 96 in a 45

We love to pick up on random Corvette-related stories and troubles people seem to have keeping the Corvette at (or even close to) the speed limit.  Well, we've found yet another great story.

On February 8th, a Maricopa County (AZ) Sheriff's Office's deputy was spotted by a motorcycle cop at a very high rate of speed.  The 2008 Chevrolet Corvette was being driven by Jason Parker, the MCSO deputy!

The motorcycle cop was able to clock the deputy in the Vette going 96 in a 45 mph speed zone.  Not so smart Deputy!  He was also cited for no proof of insurance, but that was the least of his worries...

Gotta love law enforcement!

GM Shows Style in Detroit with ZR1

2009 Corvette ZR1 at GM Style ShowLast night in Detroit, GM had it's second annual GM Style show that showcases the hot new GM vehicle designs with fashion, music, and celebrities.  It really is an interesting way to get more media exposure and highlight your vehicles before most other automakers hit the ground in Detroit.

This year, the big star of the show, and the final vehicle to roll out on the runway, was the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 with Jeff Gordon behind the wheel.  The ZR1 no doubt be one of the hottest vehicles to see at the NAIAS starting this week.  Mary J. Blige, Maroon 5, and Kid Rock also took part in the event, which was open to about 1,500 people.

Our friends at AutoBlog have a great gallery of high-res pictures from the event last night, you can click over and check them out in full.

Also, click on to see the video below of Bob Lutz, GM's Vice Chairman getting down with Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.  Classic, you don't want to miss it.

GT5 Features 1960 Corvette

We love Corvettes of the past.  Who doesn't?  While we can't all drive a 1960 Corvette at our leisure, we may have the chance to experience something close to it (mind you without the wind blowing through our hair). We can experience the joy of yesterday in the games of today.  The latest edition of the popular video game, Gran Turismo 5, will feature the 1960 Corvette.

We've covered Gran Turismo in the past and the game's appreciation for early Vettes. There are some great screenshots of the game over at PS3 FanBoy of not just the Corvette but many other models that will be featured in the game, which is scheduled to be released sometime in 2008.

Just click on the image below to go to the gallery while you wait and get excited about this sure-to-be amazing video game.

Yahoo Maps adds Drag and Drop Functionality

Yahoo! MapsWhile this may not be a direct "Corvette" related story, it still has some bearing on us Corvette-lovers.  If you are like me, you are always looking for the best, quickest way to get somewhere.  Yahoo Maps has now added Drop and Drag Functionality to it's maps, meaning if you don't like a particular road or the route that Yahoo recommends, just click on that part of your route and move it to a different street or highway that you know works better and it re-calculates your route.

Google Maps
have had this functionality for a while now, but its nice to get more services with the feature.  Additionally, you can always use OnStar with your Corvette Directions and Connections package, should you subscribe - that's always easiest when you can just hit the blue button and have your OnStar Advisor do it all for you.  Of course some of you have the Navigation option on your Corvettes, which means, you are set to begin with!

Either way, we are all better off and hopefully more on time!

Would You Vote for a Corvette Owner?

John McCain Corvette OwnerNothing says Future President like Corvette-owner.  In a story today we learn about the first cars of the 2008 Presidential Candidates.  Turns out, John McCain's first car was a 1958 Corvette!  If that doesn't give him an advantage I don't know what does.

Here's a quick list of the candidates first cars, and current cars in parenthasis.

  • John McCain:  Chevy Corvette  (Now:  Cadillac CTS)
  • Hillary Clinton:  Oldsmobile Cutlass  (Now:  Ford Hybrid)
  • John Edwards:  Plymouth Duster  (Now:  Ford Escape)
  • Barack Obama:  Ford Granada  (Now:  Chrysler 300C)
  • Bill Richardson:  Ford Mustang  (Now:  Jeep Wrangler)
  • Rudy Giuliani:  Used Dodge  (Now:  Doesn't drive...)
  • Mike Huckabee:  Mercury Montego  (Now:  Chevy Tahoe)
  • Mitt Romney:  Rambler Classic  (Now:  Ford Mustang)
Other candidates unknown, but for now, you have to admit the ball is in John McCain's court!

1965 Corvette Display Auctioned Off for $705,000!

Corvette Cut-Away Auctioned OffBeing from Detroit, we have a great appreciation for Car Shows, car displays and all that goes into marketing cars to the world.  This story takes us back to 1965.

GM and Chevy used Autoramas to display cars and bring the technology and vehicles to customers in a revolutionary way for the time.  The Corvette was nearly 3 years old in '65 and the hype had died down a little in that time.  They decided they would create a cut-away display of the Corvette to show how not only the beauty of the car, but also how advanced the vehicle was.

Reportedly the display's location was unknown for sometime until the 1990's when it was returned to the US and purchased by Al Wiseman.  This week it went on the auction block to the highest bidder looking to revel in Corvette history.  The final bid on the vehicle was $640,000 and with the buyer's commission of 10%, the final cost coming in at a whopping $704,000!  The buyer you ask?  Showdown Muscle Cars, out of Detroit.

Even better, our friends at CorvetteBlogger have a video of the auction, available after the jump.

C5 Corvette 3-Dial Weather Station Clock

C5 Corvette 3-Dial Weather Station ClockIn our continuing series on great gift ideas for the holidays, today we are featuring the C5 Corvette 3-Dial Weather Station Clock.  We all love to know what the time and weather has in store for us and this is a great gift to give it to us, from Chevy Mall.

The clock is 14 3/4" in diameter, has humidity and temperature dials, a second hand in a lower dial on its own (which I've always thought was a nice feature) and a 3 year limited warranty.  All that and it still comes in its own collectible gift box.

The 3-Dial Weather Station Clock is on sale now!  The price is listed at $27.95, down from $30.00.  The only bad part about it is that its not a C6 clock, but for those Corvette lovers, I doubt that would be a deal breaker on this one.  There's no C6 clock out yet, but you can bet it will be on the way (probably when the C7 comes out...)

To order yours today, head over to Chevy Mall.

Rent a Corvette

I just received a call from a CorvetteBlog reader who inquired as to where to rent a Corvette.  It occurred to me that since I get this question about once a year, and since I know the answer, I should probably write my answer for others who didn't think to ask it (yet anyway).

Reasons to rent a Corvette are many:

a special car for a special birthday or anniversary

a special car to drive in the Woodward Dream Cruise or to another Corvette venue like America's Corvette Show, Corvettes at Carlisle, Corvette Funfest, or Bloomington Gold

a vehicle to rent for an extended 'test drive' to check out Corvette equipment, and think through which options would work best on the car one intends to buy

For those who wish to rent a Corvette (or some of its competition), there is actually a website that lists companies that provide this service nationally: ExoticCarRentalDirectory.com.

In Michigan, there is only one company that provides this service: Classic Auto Rentals in Birmingham.  By the way, they also have pre-owned Corvettes for sale.  Their phone is 248.258.6560.

Chevy's 2008 Year in Country Music Calendar

Phil Vassar and a Z06Chevy always associates itself with big name events.  The next event they will sponsor is the CMA's (Country Music Awards) on November 7th.

As part of the promotion for the event, and for Chevies in general, they are distributing over 3 million calendars in such publications as People, Country Weekly, CMA Close Up, NASCAR Illustrated and Progressive Farmer.  Fans will also be able to download the calendar online with behind the scenes photos.

The highlight in our opinion is Phil Vassar posing with a 2008 Velocity Yellow Corvette Z06 in front of an old gas station.  He has a new album coming out with a song called "My Chevrolet."  With that kind of song, of course he'd get the photo with the hottest car Chevy makes!

Check out the calendar in your favorite magazine or download it online at Chevy Nation.

Route 66 DVD Hits Stores with Corvette Extras

Good old Route 66 has hit DVD.  That's right folks, you can travel along with Buz Murdock and Tod Stiles and relive it all.

I enjoyed Brian O'Neill's review from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  While he doesn't give the DVD 4 stars, he still points out what our readers will really enjoy...

"Though you'll dig the Corvette convertible that zips through the United States circa 1960, you may wonder why these guys liked the road when so many of their stops put them amid crazies and thugs. Of course, it could be the beautiful women they rescue from various degrees of peril at every stop. Look for a young Suzanne Pleshette, among others."

Either way, the DVD is available now, and has some fun extras that include a bunch of still shots that show the evolution of the Corvette, something we all can enjoy.

The DVD series is available now and retails for $29.98.

Video of the Week: KLBJ Wreck-A-Vette

This week's Video of the Week isn't exactly a video, but it does count for our purposes.  This prank call from Dudley & Bob of Radio Station KLBJ of Austin, Texas is called "Wreck-A-Vette".  The DJ's seem to be along the lines of a Bubba the Love Sponge show from what I can tell.  I do love Bubba.  Regardless, they prank a Corvette customer in for service and boy does he have a bad experience!  Have fun listening (and watching) this clip!

If Corvette Should Be Like Porsche,What About An SUV?

Just last week, CorvetteBlog brought your attention to a significant article in Motor Trend magazine (not on-line at the time) about possible future Corvettes.  MT is now on-line.

Motor Trend suggested using Porsche as a pattern, so that Corvette would develop three models in the years ahead.  The idea is that the base Corvette would be patterned after the Carrera 2 Coupe and Convertible.  The Z06 would be patterned after the GT3, GT3 RS, and GT2.  The highest performance Z07/SS/ZR1 variant would be derived from the 911 Turbo.

The more I considered it, though: why stop there?  Porsche has a fantastic performance SUV, the Cayenne, named after a hot pepper, so why not an American based hot SUV for the Corvette family, too?  So, what do you think, Motor Trend?

Why Not Just Drive It?

Too often I hear that Corvette owners don't drive their vehicles everywhere.  They have a second (or in some lucky cases a third) vehicle that they use for 'everyday' errands and save the Corvette for special occasions or joy riding events.  This story is about a couple who thinks differently.

Don and Martha Sipe of Albany, Indiana treat their 2007 Corvette as any other normal car, but appreciate it as any other Vette owner.

Since March, they have put over 11,000 miles on their Corvette, driving across the country and across town.  They love the leather seats, they love the gas mileage, they love it all.

Their coupe is perfect for groceries or whatever they have to get in town, and wherever they have to go to show it off.  While they originally were looking at red, they ended up with Velocity Yellow because of the attraction it seems to gather from everyone around town and around the country.

For more about their story, click the link below.  We love the idea though, why not drive drive drive your Corvette.  It's about the experience and it should be enjoyed whenever possible, not just for those 'special occasions.'

C5 Corvette Ends Up in the Basement

Sometimes we know the power of the Corvette cannot be contained.  In this instance, it was abused... by a drunk driver.

In Des Moines, Iowa, the driver of a Corvette C5 drove through the wall of someone's home and low and behold, ended in the basement of the house!

No one was injured (including the driver), but you can bet Des Moines Police graciously took him away from the scene, albeit in handcuffs.

Earnhardt's New #88 Car has Corvette History

We don't cover NASCAR here at CorvetteBlog, but this story was worth a little attention.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. revealed his new sponsors and number this week.  The new Hendrick Motorsports car will race as #88, sponsored by Mountain Dew and Amp Energy Drink.

Earnhardt had a say in the design of the paint scheme for the new Chevrolet Impala SS.  In fact, he said, "It's basic and clean-looking, and we painted the back deck flat black in honor of the Corvette that I drove with my dad" in an endurance race, Junior said.

We've covered Dale Jr's love of Corvettes before.  He's always been a proud Chevy supporter.  Now when can we see him on the LeMans circuit?!

Astronauts and Corvettes

If you have read the Corvette Blog for very long, you know we love the National Corvette Museum, and you've probably read about the interesting (to say the least) connection between U.S. astronauts at Cape Canaveral / Cape Kennedy and the Chevrolet Corvette.

A new book captures that relationship with finesse.  Jay Barbree, NBC's veteran space correspondent, has authored Live From Cape Canaveral, an engaging behind-the-scenes look at the American space race.  A recent report at MSNBC.com includes great fun information about the astronauts in their Corvettes on the space coast highways and their "interaction" with the local police force.

How to NOT Park a Corvette

Well this one really stunned us over here at CorvetteBlog.  In Indianapolis this past Thursday, a gentleman allegedly offered a Police Officer $20 to forget about him parking his 2007 Corvette illegally.

No kidding!  He was arrested on charges of bribery, resisting arrest and public intoxications.  Mind you, this all happened at 3:30 in the afternoon!!  I mean come on, if you can afford a new Corvette, you can afford the $20 being charged for spaces around town instead of bribing the Police!

Apparently with the NFL kickoff going on around the town close to the dome, parking spots were scarce at best, so he made his own and tried to make it work... with little success I might add.

His final last words?   "Here, why don't you just let me leave it there for a little longer?"  Sorry man, even your Corvette can't stay there!  So take note Vette owners, even you are not immune to the law!

The August issue of Road & Track Magazine suggests the use of a website sponsored by Firestone tires.  The website provides a state by state (and province by province) look of great roads that offer driving enchantment.

The website also provides a list of great automotive museums by state/province.

Project Gotham Racing 4 to Include 1963 Corvette

Project Gotham Racing 4Project Gotham Racing 4, the next in a very popular driving/racing game collection is set to be released in September of this year.  The game will include the iconic 1963 Chevrolet Corvette!

I was able to find a couple of screen shots from the game, and a movie that you can watch that's only a minute long, but features the Corvette in the rain.

You'll be able to pick up the game for $59.95 and believe me, it really makes me think I've held out long enough to get an XBOX 360!

Corvette Light Up Coin - Are they Serious?

Corvette DollarI was watching TV today when I came across a commercial for the Corvette Coin.  I stopped in my tracks, not just because I contribute to the blog and love Corvettes, but because I thought - this must be a spoof.

But oh no, this Corvette Coin is a reality.  The coin is the first ever to actually light up, and features a 2008 Corvette Z06 in Yellow on the front.  Now why you want a coin that lights up, I seriously don't know.  There's a limit of 5 per customer, so keep that in mind.  Granted, its an interesting talking piece, but it has no association with the US Mint.

If you want to shell out $19.95 for the coin (+$4.95 for shipping), then by all means, click on the link below.  Otherwise, click on it to just see how crazy it really is.  There's a flash commercial on their site, so you can be stopped in your tracks too.

(Side note:  if anyone gets one of these, send us a review so we can hear what you think!)

Corvette Fun for Buick Open Golfers

According to Krysten Oliphant for The Detroit News, "Golf is rarely associated with high-speed excitement and thrilling turns.  But players in the Buick Open experienced just that -- riding in high-speed sports cars with professional drivers -- Tuesday, at the General Motors Driving Experience at Waterford Hills Road Racing.

Vehicles used during the event included blue and yellow Chevrolet Corvette Z06s, a yellow race-ready Pontiac Solstice GXP, and an official 2007 Indianapolis 500 Corvette C6 Pace Car

Golfers who enjoyed the experience included Parker McLaughlin, Jason Gore, Frank Lickliter, and Jeff Gove .

MAST Academy is First with Drive Corvette to Work Photos

Corvette Blog is delighted to announce that the Maritime & Science Technology Academy of Miami, Florida is first to submit photos of their beautiful Corvettes for publication.  We are looking at a white 1980, pewter 1998 and red 1967.  Thank you, sir, for a job well done.

The beach picture (wouldn't you like to work by the beach?) was taken across the street from the school, and the flag pole shot is right at the school.  Robert F. Lassiter, U.S.C.G. (Retired) states that the site is Hobie Beach on Virginia Key, between Miami and Key Biscayne.

That reminds me of the Chevrolet Biscayne, a fine car that never quite had the attraction of the Corvette!

Drive Your Corvette to Work Day

Friday, June 29th, is the date of the 7th Annual Drive Your Corvette To Work Day, sponsored by Mid America Motorworks. In honor of Drive Your Corvette To Work Day, enthusiasts across the United States make "America's Sports Car" their commuter car for the day. Every year, the Friday closest to June 30, Corvette's official birthday, is chosen to observe Drive Your Corvette To Work Day.

The goal is to have as many Corvette owners as possible drive their car to work that day. Launched in 2001, Drive Your Corvette To Work Day is an annual event celebrated by thousands of Corvette owners.

The photo shown at the right is of employees at American Axle and Manufacturing, who lined their vehicles up in a previous celebration of Drive Your Corvette to Work Day.

Presidential Candidates and Corvettes

With so much focus on presidential candidates by the press, it was only a matter of time before someone would discuss what the candidates drive.  The readers of Corvette Blog, no doubt, would like to know if any are driving Vettes.

The Detroit Free Press, in fact, reported the story today.  In an article discussing six Democrat and seven Republican candidates, only one was identified as a Corvette enthusiast.  And the winner: Joe Biden.  His 1967 Corvette was a wedding gift from his dad in the same year.

Congratulations, Mr. Biden, as our Corvette Enthusiast of the Day!

Soundtrack to the World's Greatest V8 Engines Includes Corvette (Of Course)

Piston Productions has produced an audio compilation CD that highlights the sounds of the greatest V8 powered race cars of the world, including Corvette. Recorded live at the finest racetracks, dyno rooms, and twisty back roads in the U.S., you will hear the thunderous roar that is produced by these awesome V8 engines. For so many of us, it is beautiful music, to say the least!

You'll be trackside hearing the awesome GT and prototype cars like the Factory Corvettes and the Saleen S7-R, as well as the factory backed Mustang FR500C. A great retired Bush North car sounds great going through the gears. Many more modern race cars are also highlighted. Vintage cars are also well represented by a 1966 McLaren M1c, a GT-350, a GT-40, and the 1970 boss 302 Trans-Am car.

Cost is a mere $20, plus shipping and handling!

Corvettes Particpate in Joy Ride Rally

Corvettes are often vehicle of choice for Cannonball Run type rallies across the country.  The Joy Ride Rally recently chronicled by SoCalSpeedZone included at least one heavily accessorized C5 and one C6 Z06.

Part of the beauty of the experience is the ability to have a lot of fun while helping raise significant funds for charity.  For example, $1000 of the entry fee for those driving in the Joy Ride Rally was designated for the Salvation Army's Hurricane Katrina Relief Project.  This adds up to a pretty nice sum!

Opening Day in Detroit

Seeing as Opening Day for the Tigers in Detroit is a holiday for us, we thought you'd like to share in the excitement.  A 2007 Atomic Orange Metallic Corvette was on full display on top of the General Motors Fountain at Comerica Park.  It was mimicked on the other side of the fountain by a new Chevy Silverado.

The Tigers did fall short in extra innings to the Blue Jays, but the 2006 American League Champions have 161 more games to look forward to.  I know we will!

Miniature Corvette Replicas for the Kids to Drive

Let your little one take the driver’s seat in one of the miniature antique Corvettes at Zoomers.  Consider it perfect for you and your ankle biter to ride together! Grab your bobby socks and peddle pushers, and take a trip along a roadway themed with 1950’s nostalgia, like old fashioned gas pumps and a drive in-movie.

Zoomers Gas 'n Go can be found at Lake Compounce, Bristol, Connecticut.  They consider it New Englands' Family Theme Park.  The park opens for the season in about a month. Looks like fun!
