National Corvette Museum Aims to Add-on

Plans to add a Motorsports park to Bowling Green’s National Corvette Museum are in the beginning stages. The museum has already begun purchasing surrounding land to make this park become a reality. Of the 300 acres needed, 70 acres have been purchased by the museum.

The proposed park will include a quarter-mile drag strip, 2.5-mile course, 10-acre autocross diagonal skid pad, paddock, control tower, go-cart track, as well as restroom facilities.

Wendell Storde, executive director of the museum, says this park could potentially bring 100,000+ visitors to Bowling Green annually. Many in the community are enthused about this new park and its potential to attract visitors to the area.

Fundraising and sponsorship initiatives are just beginning, though the museum did raise $177,000 from last year’s 15th anniversary celebration. The museum plans to privately raise $25 million for the park to come to fore wishing.

Museum officials hope to begin construction on the park come 2011.

Corvette Hall of Fame 2010 Inductees

Three new members were officially inducted this year into the 2010 Corvette Hall of Fame!

With twelve years of history and over 40 inductees who, in some way, have influenced Corvette’s success, the National Corvette Museum's Hall of Fame is proud to now include:

GRADY DAVIS, former executive vice president of Gulf Oil Corp.

  • "Davis was the man and the muscle behind Gulf Oil’s sponsorship of Corvette Racing through the early 60s. He showed everyone that Corvette was a world-class racecar. He established the benchmark for Corvette Racing that we continue to emulate today."

– nominator John Walko

FRED GALLASCH, retired assistant brand manager of Corvette

  • "All of us have passion for our families. Many of us have passion for our employment. Most have passion for their hobbies. Fred's passion for Corvette has been his hobby and his employment, and the many friends he has made through Corvette have become family."

- nominator Karl Hannum

JAMES INGLE, retired Corvette development engineer

  • "...one of the unsung heros of the Corvette. Since his first assignment in 1975 as the lead development engineer dedicated to the Corvette, Jim has demonstrated a mastery of the Corvette engineering, and a no fooling, let's get it done attitude. I believe the Corvette evolved into the best sports car on the market in part due to the efforts of Jingles."

- nominator William R. Nichols

These three men’s names and photos will soon be showcased on the walls of the museum’s famous red spire room. Congratulations gentlemen!

Vets Honored at 'Vette Museum

The National Corvette Museum celebrated their second-annual tradition this year during the first weekend in November. Three days of festivities were planned in honor of our U.S. veterans.

Nearly 150 veterans were included in the long-weekend of events, which included drag racing, golf cart autocross, tours, scavenger hunts, poker runs, a formal banquet and more. A Bowling Green Veterans Day Parade topped the cake on Saturday.

No Corvette required upon admission, only $10.

Are Our National Museums Worthy of Economic Stimulus Money?

In these already troubling economic times, millions in federal economic stimulus money has been spent on the building and preserving of our national museums.

Within the past four years alone, $28 million has been spent on funding 55 transportation-related museums, including the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The argument:

  • Some rationalize that the stimulus money is needed MUCH more in mending our current economic problems.

  • Others feel that our national museums enrich our communities and give our future generations an abundance of knowledge, history and culture. They also help to improve tourism, which grows local economies.

We love our Corvette Museum, don't get us wrong... but should public money be used to fund the museum?  So, we’ll leave the big question up to you… Where should our nation spend this stimulus money? Share your comments below.

Win a Collector's Corvette Grand Sport

In celebration of the National Corvette Museum’s 15th anniversary, the museum is raffling off an Artic White Corvette Grand Sport… Not just an ordinary Corvette either.

The Grand Sport painted in all white with a red-stripped, black hood will showcase Corvette Racing’s mascot, Jack. In honor of this memorable raffle prize, the museum has also added the NCM official logo to the car’s B-pillar.

With a six speed manual transmission, the vehicle also comes equipped with dual mode exhaust as well as a ZR1 rear spoiler. “You can summarize the car this way,” Tadge Juechter, Chief Engineer of the Corvette said, “Zero to sixty in four seconds; 26 miles a gallon.”

Since each raffle ticket costs a pretty penny ($150 each), the NCM has decided to only offer out 2,009 raffle tickets in total, giving participants a good chance of winning. Even if you don’t take home the collector’s Corvette Grand Sport, second place winner receives $10,000 and third place will win $5,000. Not to bad if you ask me!

Tickets for the raffle are still available by simply clicking below. You only have until Sunday, September 6th at 10 a.m. before the winning tickets are picked!

Corvette Plant Gets New Schedule

Corvette’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant recently announced a new schedule of production hours, effective July 20th. Instead of a normal 8-hour, 5 days per week, operation hours will be reduced to 10-hour days, 4 days per week.

The nearly 500 workers now employed will be expected to work Monday through Thursday from 6:12am until 4:42pm. There is no word of how long this new schedule will endure.

To further control production numbers of Corvettes, the plant is also scheduled to close August 3rd, August 10th, and August 17th.

Corvette Builds 1,500,000th

1.5 Millionth CorvetteGeneral Motor’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant produced its 1,500,000th Corvette on May 28, 2009. The special announcement was made at a Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association June meeting.

“The 1.5 millionth Corvette is a great example of how Chevy is America’s Brand,” says Chevrolet’s Product Marketing Director, Karen Rafferty. “For nearly 60 years we have built America’s Sports Car and this milestone is a solid proof point.”

In keeping with tradition, the historic 1,500,000th Corvette was built identical to the first, 500,000th, and 1,000,000th Corvettes ever built. Each are assembled with a black convertible top, white body, 3LT body style, and red interior.  What a neat idea and tradition!  More photos of the event after the jump!

Do you predict Chevrolet will make it to producing Corvette No. 2,000,000? We can only hope!

Lucky #54 Wins Z06

The very FIRST 2009 Competition Sport Package Z06 was raffled off last week courtesy of the National Corvette Museum. The lucky ticket #54 won William Leighton of The Woodlands, Texas this beautiful Z06 prize.

This raffle was yet another event planned to continue the weeklong C5/C6 Birthday Bash celebration! Tickets for the raffle cost $450 each, though the vehicle equates out to a $77,500 purchase. Mr. Leighton, lucky enough, also has the option to receive his new prize at the museum in a celebratory delivery fashion. Not too shabby!

Funds from the raffle go toward purchasing the next museum’s raffle car. General Motors graciously gave the museum the opportunity to buy the first Z06 for the event. “We are excited to have the first VIN representing this extraordinary Corvette model to use as a fundraiser,” states NCM Executive Director, Wendell Strode. “We appreciate the allocation from our friends at GM allowing us the chance to purchase this car for use as a fundraiser, and look forward to meeting the winner when they take delivery at the Museum. We hope that by continuing to offer these raffles to benefit the Museum, we are also giving someone an opportunity to become a Corvette owner that might not have had the opportunity.”

Don’t worry if you missed out for this raffle, tickets for future museum raffles can be found by clicking here. Good luck!

National Corvette Museum Gets an Addition

As we promised from an earlier blog, we have updated news regarding the National Corvette Museum’s expansion inside Bowling Green, Kentucky. When we last wrote, plans for the construction of the 70+ acres outside the current museum had just been approved and funding for the large project was in its early stages. That was then.

Now, the museum has plans to add on an additional 47,000 square feet to the building’s existing floor plans. The massive expansion and enhancement to the current facilities hopes to lure in more tourists and Corvette enthusiasts. The expansion will occur within the following sections: the Library and Archives, Corvette Store, Delivery Prep offices, Admissions, Hall of Fame, Conference Center and Café, and extra amenities that will accommodate public needs, such as bathrooms and storage lockers.

Labor Day weekend is the temporary date of completion for this project, which also just so happens to be the Museum’s 15th Anniversary! What a way to celebrate!  You can also watch a video of the expansion after the jump.

NCM's New Acreage

The National Corvette Museum (NCM) located in Bowling Green, Kentucky has recently announced their plans to begin funding for 70+ acres outside the museum. The museum already offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history of Corvettes. But soon, one will also be able to catch a glimpse of Corvettes being tested on a quarter-mile drag strip as well as on a mile and half road course.

In order to acquire the land, the funding project already put in place, deemed “Motorplex Park”, will require nearly $1,060,000 to finance. The land will ultimately consist of a drag strip, road course, and skid pad area for testing a vehicle’s braking systems.

NCM’s Executive Director, Wendell Strode proposes, “We are extremely excited about this opportunity which will broaden our mission and remain grateful for the continual support of the Corvette community.”

We hope to keep you updated as the project continues on.

National Corvette Museum Delivery Experience: the Bob Parrin Story

This CorvetteBlog is a special treat, for it is written by another of the Completely Satisfied Corvette customers to buy through our parent company, George Matick Chevrolet, and also participate in the National Corvette Museum Delivery program.

The words of Bob and Kitty Parrin of Indiana when they took delivery of their new Crystal Red Metallic 2008 Corvette Convertible in October:

Back to the future.  That pretty much describes our trip to Bowling Green for the delivery of our 2008 C6 Convertible.

Yes, it felt like the 1960’s all the way around, but in 21st century style.  Back to a time when cars were fun and exciting.  Think Mini Coopers and mid-year Corvettes.  Cars of my dreams.  Fortunately automakers have given us modern versions of these classics.

Corvette Production's Move to Bowling Green

As a follow-up to my “Corvette’s Turning Point” story a month ago: the success of the Corvette as refocused by Zora Arkus-Duntov created new challenges. Sales of the overhauled roadster soon skyrocketed, adding pressure to the already struggling St. Louis plant’s workforce.

Production had risen from the first year’s 300 (built that one year in Flint, Michigan) to 3,467 annual units in 1956, but no one could have predicted that what was generally considered to be a small niche vehicle would spell doom for the original St. Louis plant. Production in 1960 topped 10,000 units, a record later shattered by the 1963 mark of 21,500. They surpassed building 30,000 units by 1969, and eventually peaked at an incredible 53,807 Corvettes in 1979!

Indy 500 Corvette Pace Cars

Corvette has been selected as the Indy 500 Pace Car a remarkable nine times.  This year's vehicle will be the fourth year in a row!  The Chevrolet brand has served a record eighteen times!  Chevrolet marketing moguls have frequently helped to immortalize this achievement by producing a limited number of replica Corvettes for the buying public to purchase and enjoy.

For example, large volume Chevy dealers currently have the opportunity of selling the 2007 Corvette Convertible Z51 Pace Car Replica in Atomic Orange.  500 units will be built.

The National Corvette Museum commemorates this achievement of Corvette by displaying a large number of these unique originals or replicas.

What is a Corvette, Anyway?

A question Corvette fans love to answer is "what is a Corvette anyway?"  Sure, some people do not know that a "corvette" was a seaworthy vessel used during World War II.

Another great thing about the National Corvette Museum is that they have this remarkable model of a corvette.  It's not difficult to see how it inspired the name of our favorite sports car.

National Corvette Museum Honors Dale Earnhardt

At the base of the spire (or "frustrum" as it is called by some) in the SkyDome, display cases present a wide range of items either which had been owned by Dale Earnhardt, or were created to honor him.

This collection, which primarily came from Terry Neal Thomas of Kentucky, includes cereal boxes, mugs, knives, model cars, autographs, the tragic accident newspaper headlines, photographs, and many other items.  In addition, a smaller similar selection is dedicated to Dale, Jr.

Corvette's Turning Point

The Missing 1983 Corvette!

Those familiar with Corvette history are well aware that there was no 1983 Corvette.  The industry standard Corvette Black Book certainly shows no entry between the 1982 and 1984 Corvettes.

Imagine my amazement this past Saturday at the National Corvette Museum standing in front of a white 1983 Corvette! This unique Corvette is shown to the right.

The sign on the exhibit explains: "The planned 1983 Corvette brought forward some of the most far reaching design changes in Corvette's history.  Many changes included high-technology that had not been proven for automobile application....Although the technology was available, it had to be developed into the manufacturing process with the quality, reliability, and durability proven before production of saleable vehicles could begin.  The initial plan called for introduction of the newly designed 1983 in October 1982.  There were 43 pre-production models built (but) a decision was made to withhold production (for sale) until January 1983 and to serialize them as 1984 models.  The Corvette was named "Car of the Year" by Motor Trend Magazine in 1984."

Wisconsin couple gives $1.3 million to Corvette Museum

If you’ve been reading our Corvette Blog for very long, you already know that the National Corvette Museum, in south-central Kentucky’s Bowling Green, announced recently that they are fund-raising currently for a major expansion.

The likelihood of that expansion increased dramatically last week when Ivan and Mary Shrodt of Sherwood, Wisconsin, donated $1.3 million, the largest gift in the museum's history.  Mr. Shrodt is a retired research director for Kimberly Clark Corporation.

According to a news story through the Associated Press, the money will go toward the planned $14 million expansion.  Museum director Wendell Strode stated that the project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2009.

The Shrodt’s have no children, and have stated that they gave the money to the Bowling Green museum because of their affection for Corvettes.  "We looked at what we valued and what was important to us," said Ivan Shrodt, 60.
