Build Your Own Engine?

Tom Read from GM's Advanced Powertrain Technology Communications recently stated, "We are considering the program".

What’s this program that he speaks of? Well, it will allow Corvette ZR1 buyers to build their very own LS9 V8 638 horsepower engine!

So now, in addition to employing 38 skilled builders at the Wixom, Mich. Performance Build Center to personally oversee and construct 45 LS9 engines each week, GM may present this same opportunity to customers who purchase their own ZR1. I’m afraid watching your Corvette come off the production line has now been replaced with building your own engine.

Pretty cool, if you ask us.

What do you think of this opportunity if GM comes through with approving it? Would you want to take part? The first hurdle you’d have to face, of course, would be the purchase of your $100,000 baby.

Check out the video after the jump.

AutoWeek Sources Say Mid-Engined C7 is Dead

According to well-placed sources, a Corvette with a mid-engined layout was well into development in 2008, until the global financial meltdown cut off funding sources.  Then, General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson proclaimed in May that the Corvette was paying it's own way, and that the C7 was alive.

Now, as AutoWeek Magazine's print version declared this week (11.16.09 issue), there may no longer be a C7 in development!  Say it ain't so!  We love the 6th Generation, without a doubt, but we want -- we need -- a future, too!

Corvette Plant Gets New Schedule

Corvette’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant recently announced a new schedule of production hours, effective July 20th. Instead of a normal 8-hour, 5 days per week, operation hours will be reduced to 10-hour days, 4 days per week.

The nearly 500 workers now employed will be expected to work Monday through Thursday from 6:12am until 4:42pm. There is no word of how long this new schedule will endure.

To further control production numbers of Corvettes, the plant is also scheduled to close August 3rd, August 10th, and August 17th.

Corvette Plant Gets Bronze Honor for Quality

Bowling Green Assembly PlantJ.D. Power & Associates recently conducted an Initial Quality Study, focused on the quality of all vehicles produced for the U.S. market. Reports concluded that the big three have improved their vehicle quality by 10% since last year.

In fact, the GM Bowling Green Assembly Plant received its very own Bronze Award honors for its quality inspection. The assembly plant ranked 5th place internationally for overall vehicle quality! This Corvette and Cadillac XLR plant only averaged 43 vehicle issues out of every 100 vehicles produced (or a rating of 43 PP100). The industry average for initial quality problems was 108 per 100 vehicles produced.

Though 43 faults may seem quite high, this score was only surpassed by THREE plants, which included:

  • Toyota’s Japanese plant (29 PP100)
  • Honda’s Ohio plant (41 PP100)
  • GM’s Ontario plant (42 PP100)
  • Ford’s Kentucky Truck plant (43 PP100) and
  • GM’s Bowling Green plant (43 PP100)

“High quality generally translates into reduced re-engineering costs and lower warranty expenses during a vehicle’s life cycle. High quality also enhances an automaker’s reputation for reliability, which is a critical purchase consideration for many consumers,” says David Sargent, J.D. Power and Associates’ vice president of automotive research.

Corvette proves, once again, to be the ultimate pure-American quality super car!

Corvette Builds 1,500,000th

1.5 Millionth CorvetteGeneral Motor’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant produced its 1,500,000th Corvette on May 28, 2009. The special announcement was made at a Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association June meeting.

“The 1.5 millionth Corvette is a great example of how Chevy is America’s Brand,” says Chevrolet’s Product Marketing Director, Karen Rafferty. “For nearly 60 years we have built America’s Sports Car and this milestone is a solid proof point.”

In keeping with tradition, the historic 1,500,000th Corvette was built identical to the first, 500,000th, and 1,000,000th Corvettes ever built. Each are assembled with a black convertible top, white body, 3LT body style, and red interior.  What a neat idea and tradition!  More photos of the event after the jump!

Do you predict Chevrolet will make it to producing Corvette No. 2,000,000? We can only hope!

2010 Corvette Grand SportThe hottest topic on CorvetteBlog right now is the 2010 Corvette, and rightfully so.  The specific interest has been in the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport.  We have all the details you need about the hottest addition to the Corvette family.

Let's go over some of what we know.  First of all, the Grand Sport will be available in both coupe and convertible, in every trim level (1LT, 2LT, 3LT, and 4LT). The most defining aspect of the Grand Sport has to be it's aggressive look and wider track than the current C6.  It will have a unique fender design and the Grand Sport badge will appear in the cove.  There will be a front splitter and tall rear spoiler.

The Grand Sport offers a Heritage package with fender hash mark stripes (4 stripe colors) and special two-tone seats with "Grand Sport" embroidery as an available option.  Every exterior and interior color will be available to order.

Technically speaking, the Grand Sport will have functional brake ducts and additional cooling.  It has larger 6-piston 14" front and 4-piston 13.4" rear brakes, both with silver painted calipers.  The manual Coupe version will have a Z52 dry sump package with a rear battery.

Now a little bit about the wheels and tires.  There will be three Grand Sport specific wheels:  Silver, Competition Gray and Chrome.  It will come with the wider sized Goodyear F1 supercar tires (275/35-18x9.5 and 325/30-19x12)

There are many benefits to the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport.  First, there is a greater lateral acceleration.  The standard is .92 g, the previous Z51 offered .98 g and the Grand Sport comes in at 1.0 g.  It gains 0.2 seconds in the 0-60 test versus standard Corvettes  (4.0 vs 4.2).  All of this and even 26 mpg highway rating vs 24 mpg for Z06.

Pricing has not been yet released, but when we have the details, we will immediately post it for you.  See the complete list of specifications after the jump.

If you are interested in custom ordering a 2010 Corvette Grand Sport, contact us at CorvetteBlog.  You can leave a comment, which will be kept private, or give us a call at (888) 875-0728.  We're here to help you with an easy online purchase experience and many delivery options.

Cost-Cuts Consume Corvette

With the current state of the economic crisis, government, companies, and even consumers nationwide are simply having to cut their spending in order to stay afloat. This threat is very real and does not exclude anyone from being affected by it.

Due to the crisis, General Motors has decided to hold off the production of Corvettes at the Bowling Green assembly plant during the week of October 6th. With the high prices of gasoline and numerous vehicles that remain stagnant on dealership lots, GM has also decided to lessen the production of Corvettes produced after the plant resumes to work the following week. Instead of producing 18.5 Corvettes every hour, the plant will slow down to 15 Corvettes every hour. Not only will work stop for a week and less vehicles will be produced, but also GM plans to layoff up to 75 workers from the Bowling Green facility.

Much of these plans came up very recently in order to cut back costs during such a trying time. The gloom of the economy is affecting everyone in some way. Like most of us, General Motors is just reacting to the crisis, planning ahead in order to stay afloat.

Birthing Center for Corvette LS7 & LS9 Engines

Last Thursday's 2008 GM Performance Build Center Open House is now history, but what an excellent opportunity it was to see the amazing engines that power both the Z06 and the ZR1 in production!   Whether this annual event is officially keyed to the timing of the Woodward Dream Cruise I know not, but it does provide a great chance for those in town for the best car show in the world to see the craftsmanship of these fabulous engines.

Photography was not allowed in the assembly area, but that was no problem as Popular Hot Rodding Magazine previously provided the pictures of what we saw.  My own photos in this blog focus on the exterior and public areas.  Check the video of the build process for extra insight, and then view the photos past the break.

Video of the Week: Putting Together the LS9 Engine

This week's Video of the Week is all about putting together the LS9 engine.  General Motors Performance Build Center is the heart of where the ZR1’s internal combustion engine is built. From a sneak-peak visit, Automobile Magazine was able to catch a video of the entire production phase for us.

It takes a total of four and a half hours to transform a standard block of aluminum into a supercharged LS9. Through the fast-forward magic of video formatting, you are able to check out a seven minute condensed version of the transformation.

No Weekly Ordering as GM Summer Shutdown Begins

As we embark on the July 4th Holiday, it reminds me (as it does every year) how envious I am on the GM summer shutdown.  Everyone pretty much packs it in and takes 2 weeks off.  That said, there is no ordering for dealers over the next two weeks.

We'll be back able to order our readers Corvettes beginning on Thursday, July 17th.  We also want to take a brief moment to thank all of our customers for our success with 2008 Corvettes and the incredible interest in our 2009 allocation.

Enjoy your Independence Day and look for more fun Corvette news and stories in the coming weeks.

Change to Corvette Allocation Process for Dealers

ChevyWe received note today that Chevy has announced a change in the allocation process for Corvettes.  In the past, all allocation for dealerships wishing to order Corvettes was based upon a controlled formula that they had come up with.  Now it seems that they are going to revert back to normal ADS allocation.

ADS stands for Available Days Supply.  This means that dealers need to "turn and earn" or the faster you move the Corvettes, the sooner you earn new ones.  The Z06 and ZR1 will not be included in this change, they will stay on the controlled allocation strategy.

Here is breakdown by month of how the allocation strategy will change:
  • July Consensus for Dealers:  25% ADS / 75% Controlled Allocation
  • August Consensus:  50% ADS / 50% Controlled Allocation
  • September Consensus:  75% ADS / 25% Controlled Allocation
  • October Consensus and beyond:  100% ADS

2009 ZR1 Allocation Announced!

2009 Corvette ZR1We've been waiting just as long as you have, with just as much anticipation if not more.  Finally this morning, GM released information about the 2009 Corvette ZR1 allocation for Dealers.

June's 2008 Consensus represents the 2009 Model Year ZR1 allocation.  That means that dealers today find out how many ZR1's the have been allocated for the entire 2009 model year.

Only Certified Corvette dealers will be allocated any ZR1's, so make sure if you're out there looking for a dealer that might have one, that they have been Corvette certified like us at CorvetteBlog.com.

Here's the kicker of the announcement, we still don't know 100% how many we'll have, just a very good estimate, and we don't know yet when they will be produced.  We should know that in the coming weeks when we have confirmation of the total allocation.  At that point they will let dealers know when their ZR1s will be produced.

As a reminder, we are taking deposits for our ZR1 allocation now!  Many of our readers have already put down deposits in anticipation and we welcome yours as well.  Feel free to give us a call at (888) 875-0728 or by leaving a comment below, which will be kept private.

The exact announcement verbiage from GM is found after the jump. Continue Reading print this article Posted By Ryan In 2009 Corvette Ordering , 2009 Corvette ZR1 , Corvette News , Corvette Production | 3 Comments Permalink

Hint at ZR1 Production Dates?

2009 Corvette ZR1Today Chevrolet hosted a meeting for all dealers via Satellite discussing May's sales results and 2009 vehicle enhancements and details.

While all that was going on, he did stop a second to talk about the ZR1.  While no additional details on allocation, distribution or first ordering dates was released, he did give us one nugget of information.

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 will begin production in July.

Seeing as dealers begin their vehicle consensus process again on Friday, perhaps we can expect some details regarding allocation and firm dates for ordering in the very near future!

We appreciate all of your calls about the ZR1 and allocation information from our readers.  As soon as we know anything we'll be posting a story and contacting those readers that have showed an interest.

In the meantime, feel free to check out our ZR1 photo gallery by clicking here. print this article Posted By Ryan In 2009 Corvette ZR1 , Buying a Corvette , Corvette News , Corvette Production | 0 Comments Permalink

Let the Last Cycle Begin...

2008 Corvette Coupe - Final Week to Order!Well after 11 months of ordering the 2008 model year Corvette, today we embark on the final cycle for the year.  Today Chevrolet dealers across the country received their final allocation figures for the 2008 model year, which we will order over the next 4 weeks.  All sold orders for customers must be in this week by April 25th, while dealers will still have 3 weeks to order for stock.

The production period for vehicles ordered during this cycle is May 19th - June 20th.  On June 20th, all production will cease at the factory, there will be a 3 day window where no builds will take place as they prepare for the 2009 model year production to begin on June 23rd.

With lackluster sales figures overall, the 2009 Corvette and ZR1 are highly anticipated vehicles.  Perhaps the change in colors and updated various options will drive sales higher come summer.

If you are still in the market for a 2008 Corvette, we have allocation available which we can deliver nationally to you or to the Museum.  If you are looking for first dibs on a 2009 Corvette, we are accepting deposits now.  Simply leave a comment (which will be kept private), or give us a call direct at (888) 875-0728. print this article Posted By Ryan In 2008 Corvettes , Buying a Corvette , Corvette News , Corvette Production | 1 Comments Permalink

2009 Corvette Exterior Color Samples

2009 Corvette New Color Samples

By popular demand, we are posting sample colors of the 2 new Corvette colors for the 2009 model year, Silver Ice Metallic (17U) and Cyber Gray Metallic (57U).  Please note, we have scanned our color chip chart for you to see and the Cyber Gray comes out darker in our image than on the chart, so keep that in mind.  This is as good as we could do for all of you now, until Chevrolet releases some web-ready pictures, which we are watching for.

2008 Corvette Ordering Updates

2008 Corvette Indy Pace Car (Z4Z)While we don't normally post updates on ordering after publishing the Corvette Constraints for the week, we thought this information was worth updating you on as it was redistributed to dealers by Chevy's District Managers.  The updates are in regards to 2 different options:  The Z4Z Indy Pace Car and the 67U Machine Silver constraints.

The Z4Z Indy Pace Car replicas are still available for ordering.  When we saw the number of available units the past couple of weeks for dealers to order, we thought demand might be a little low.  Looks like we were right.  This week the ZAZ constraints are not protected.  This means that if a dealer has a Pace Car order waiting in their que but doesn't have the allocation during the initial ordering cycle, they can pick one up if another dealer passes on their allocation.  As a reminder, there are 500 replicas being built.

67U Machine Silver is now officially discontinued.  We had heard rumors and posted those thoughts in the past couple of weeks and it has now been confirmed.  They will replace Machine Silver in 2009 with two different silver color options.  One is called Blade Silver Metallic (17U) which is a lighter silver color resembling Machine Silver and the other is Cyber Gray Metallic (57U), a darker color silver/gray.

We are accepting deposits on 2009 Corvettes, which we will gladly order for you in either of those new colors or any color you desire, all at GM Supplier Pricing for our Corvette Blog readers, with national delivery.  Call us or comment back today for more details.

February Corvette Sales: Not Impressive

Corvette Sales Fall in JanuaryFebruary proved to be yet another difficult month for Corvette sales, and for those dealers that are holding Corvette inventory.  We haven't seen a growth (from the same month last year) in Corvette sales since June of 2007, and even that was by less than 1%.  If we compare January's sales of this year to February's, there is over an 18% decline.  But that's not the worst of it.

What's going on?!  One can only speculate that the sales declines recently could be attributed to both the current economic climate, and the current general climate (aka the weather) in most places.  That still doesn't account for the over 25% decline in sales compared to February 2007.

Here are the details:
  • Corvettes Sold in February 2008:  2,071    (-25.6%)

  • Corvettes Sold in February 2007:  2,784
The market cannot continue to handle the production GM is cranking out without some great incentive programs.  Sure, the $2,000 and $3,000 Customer Cash incentives are still available on 2007 models as they have been for 2 months now.  It doesn't seem to be making much of a difference.  Today they have announced another program which might help the 2007 inventory move out, which we'll be posting shortly, but will it be enough?

Let's all hope that March thaws out the snow we have here in Michigan and the seemingly frozen interest Corvette buyers have had recently.

Distribution Details Announced for Limited Edition Z06: We Have At Least 1!

Corvette 427 Z06Great news!  We finally have some information on the distribution method Chevy has decided on for the recently announced 427 Limited Edition Z06.

The first 427's will be available to order tomorrow, March 6th.  Here's the kicker... Dealers with 27 or more total Corvette sales will be awarded at least one Z44.

We are one of the elite dealers that will have a 427 Z06 available tomorrow to order!  If you are interested in placing a deposit on the order we have coming available, call us immediately at (888) 875-0728 or leave a comment (kept private) and we will get you all the information you need.

There will be two DOSP cycles that will be open for ordering of the Z44 constraint:  the first being tomorrow and the second being March 20th.

Also to note is that the Z44 constraints will not be protected and no 427 Limited Edition pattern orders will be generated to fulfill allocations. Therefore, any Z44 constraints not utilized by the originally assigned dealer will be made available to any dealer with Z06 allocation during subsequent DOSP cycles.  That's extremely unlikely to happen.

Carbon Fiber Use Not Anytime Soon

2009 Corvette ZR1As reported today on AutoBlog, it seems that the use of Carbon Fiber (CF) on the Corvette may still be at least 10 years away.  The use of CF on the ZR1 is a sure sign that GM recognizes that its use is the future of Corvette, but wants to tread lightly and see how feasible on mass produced vehicles.

Carbon Fiber is used for a number of parts on the ZR1, including the roof, hood, front fenders, and spoiler, just to name a few.  This provided GM with a savings of 35 pounds against the normal parts used on the fiberglass Corvette.

So the rational question, given the upcoming fuel standard increase, is why wouldn't GM use CF on future Corvettes as soon as next year?  Well, unfortunately its extremely cost prohibitive at this point.  While the demand for carbon fiber continues to grow, the price is not inline where it would keep the Corvette at the great price point it's always enjoyed.  The ZR1 is a totally different animal that can get away with its use, but that's all we're going to see any time soon.

2009 ZR1 Chassis Revealed

2009 Corvette ZR1 Chassis at NAIASWith the North American International Auto Show in full Preview-mode now, we are getting some great glimpses of the 2009 Corvette ZR1!  Today, Eric Bryant of AutoBlog had a fantastic write up on the ZR1 Chassis that is on full display at Cobo Center.

Chevy went all out by stripping down the hot ZR1 and giving us the bare bones of why this car is as great as it is, labeling each individual part with a number and giving show-goers the ability to understand what everything is.

If you're not lucky enough to be headed to NAIAS this coming week, then by all means check out Eric's great write up and get your information overload on the ZR1 chassis.  Don't forget to check out AutoBlog's gallery of images of the chassis as well.

Are you all as excited as we are to see this thing in person?!  Whew!

Corvette Convertible Plant Moves to Michigan

2008 Corvette C6 ConvertibleThe plant that makes the parts for the Corvette Convertible has decided to relocate.  The plant, currently located in Horry County, South Carolina is moving to Ludington, Michigan.

The news is big for those of us in Michigan looking to add jobs to our economy, but for those in South Carolina, the news is unwelcome.  The plant currently employs 94 workers and also makes sunroof parts for the BMW X5.

The reasons being given for the plant's move is because of the high transportation costs heading north to Kentucky and problems getting enough power to the plant.  They also say the weather in SC is not ideal for production, and trust us, SC weather is nothing like Michigan - so heat and humidity shouldn't be a problem for them anymore.

Robot Shortens Corvette Z06 Fender Production Cycle

We came across an interesting story about the Robot that is dramatically reducing the time for Corvette Z06 fender production.

Plasan USA out of Bennington, Vermont, is responsible for molding the front fenders of the Z06.  In the past, they had been using manual trimming methods that took over an hour to produce.

Now with the help of KMT Robotic Solutions from here in Michigan, they are using a robot that uses an abrasive waterjet to trim and drill the fender, dramatically improving the production cycle for the Z06's fenders.

The demolded fender is loaded into a vacuum fixture.  Then the robot drills the holes with a titanium-coated carbide drill bit and then changes tools and trims the fender.  How much time does it take using the new system?  Just 13 minutes, a 75% improvement in time!

Best of all, the entire process and machinery are all managed by an all female staff.

November Dealer Consensus Available

Chevy dealers all across the country have access today to their November Consensus.  For those who don't know what Consensus is, it is the report that Chevy sends to their dealers showing their estimated shipments of vehicles they can order for the following month's production period.

So what does that mean?  Basically it means that dealers know now how many Corvettes and Z06's they have been initially allocated by GM.  The Corvettes and Z06's that are ordered for this consensus period will be produced after November 15th.

Dealers can always ask for additional Corvettes and Z06's for the next week, but it is rare that GM provides any additional units than what they initially allocate.  Consensus is open for dealers until next Friday at which time they must commit to their orders.  We then find out the following Wednesday what has been approved by GM.

CorvetteBlog.com is set to have a great allocation of both 2008 Corvettes and 2008 Corvette Z06's during this period.  If you are interested in purchasing or leasing a new Corvette - give us a call at (888) 875-0728 or post a comment (which will be kept private).  We are proud to offer delivery throughout the United States, at our Corvette Showroom in Detroit, or at the Corvette Museum. print this article Posted By Ryan In 2008 Corvettes , Buying a Corvette , Corvette Dealers , Corvette Production | 0 Comments Permalink

New 2008 Corvette Orders Delayed!

If you are in the process of ordering or waiting for a Corvette order to be delivered or produced - read on!

We at CorvetteBlog.com have the exclusive report that for Corvettes ordered within the past few weeks, the Target Production Periods have been shifted forward 1-3 weeks or so (from what we've seen so far).

We now have word from GM production that they have taken over 400 Corvettes out of the production schedule, meaning that everyone who was waiting for a Corvette to be produced has now been pushed out into the future.  Production did not give a reason as to why the production schedule was cut, but one can only assume from the number of stock vehicles on the ground right now that it had something to do with it?

It is imperative that you contact the dealer who you ordered your vehicle through to confirm that you are on schedule, or to find out how your production schedule has been impacted.

Motor Trend Says it Will be Corvette ZR1

This news broke Tuesday and has been rippling everywhere on the Net.  It appears that it was Todd Lassa's post at the Motor Trend Community Blog that got it started.  Word is, that the previously called Corvette Blue Devil will be called the Corvette ZR1.

You may know from a previous post that I have predicted Corvette SS.  In fact, I still want to believe that it will be Corvette SS.  Some of the other bloggers think that Lassa's statement is conjecture, and not based on an infallible source.  However, most of the solid advance information we have received so far has indeed come from Motor Trend!  Likelihood of accuracy here is, thus, pretty good.  As a result, Corvette Blog now has a new category of previous stories (at the right): 2009 Corvette ZR1 (Blue Devil).

Corvette Ordering on Hold

As GM celebrates the July 4th holiday, dealers get a 2 week hiatus from ordering vehicles.  This includes the 2008 Corvette, which as of now, cannot be ordered again until Thursday, July 19th.  Dealers are given Thursday, Friday and Saturday to place orders and then the following Tuesday to confirm and make any necessary changes to those orders.

Currently listed constraints are as follows:
  • 4LT Option Level Package
(They expect this to be constrained through August at the earliest)

  • Crystal Red Metallic Tintcoat
(Only 10% of National Quantity is available, should increase within 4 weeks)

  • 3LZ Option Level Package for Corvette Z06
(They expect this to be constrained through August at the earliest)
As soon as the break is over, dealers will be ordering from their July consensus allocation and we hope to have a great number of 2008's to order.  We have one here now, three on the way and one Z06 coming down the pipe as well.

Should you be interested in placing an order or deposit for an upcoming allocation, simply let us know by commenting or calling us at (888) 875-0728.  You won't be disappointed!

Best Internet Tour of Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant Ever!

AutoBlog posted a great article on the Corvette assembly plant today.  Great pictures of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant abound.

As we had reported earlier, the plant is just across the street from the National Corvette Museum.  I spent three hours or more at the museum late winter.  Throw in the assembly plant, and you've got an exciting full day of activity!

GM's Toledo Powertrain Plant to Build Six Speed Trannies for Corvette

A multimillion-dollar expansion of the Toledo GM Powertrain Plant for production of a better-performing six-speed transmission scheduled for use on Corvettes is underway (see photo) and ahead of schedule.

According to Wednesday's Toledo (Ohio) Blade, GM is fast-tracking the facility to provide massive output for a wide range of rear wheel drive GM vehicles, including Corvette.

GM spokesperson Susan Garavaglia said that the automaker plans to have ten variants of the six-speed transmission available for use in its vehicles by 2010, when it will make as many as 1.8 million units a year.

Timetable on Corvette SS

My snail mail copy of Corvette Fever just hit the in-box, and they have published a timetable on our highly anticipated Corvette SS.  Claiming infallibility from a GM insider, the author of the article states that this vehicle program was officially initiated on June 20, 2005.

The Anticipated Validation Testing completion date is October 15, 2007.  The Start of Production Date is March 8, 2008, less than a year away!

Body modifications of a grander sort than have been seen in any "spy shots" will be required to accommodate P335/25R20 tires.  The inside word is that the supercharged 6.2L LS9 engine will produce 650 horses and 650 foot-pounds of torque!  The transmission will be the six-speed MTX.  Electronic limited-slip differential and a next generation brake and engine intervention traction control system round out the package.

That ought to put thoughts of Vipers out of the minds of the last hold-outs!

Corvette Plant Workers Look Ahead

bowlinggreenassembly.jpgWith the latest buyouts coming from GM, I know I personally never thought about the employees at the Corvette plant actually looking forward to the offers. I just assumed they wouldn't be interested in what GM wanted. I was wrong.

I enjoy hearing the perspective of people who make the car we love. Hear what these decisions from GM mean to them. I was enlightened by Robert Schoenberger's interesting article in The Courier-Journal titled "Corvette plant workers eye buyouts"

The Louisville Kentucky paper is a great resource and media outlet close to Bowling Green, KY (home of the Corvette plant).

Composite Maker for 2004 Corvette Z06

carbonfibermachine.jpgThere was an interesting article in the Salt Lake Tribune today.

Nancy Pottish and Peter Travisono (Salt Lake residents) were the subjects of the article which discusses their venture into Carbon Fiber, which eventually found its way onto the 2004 Corvette Z06, a Special Anniversary Edition. They formed MacLean Quality Composites which produces the product that's making everything we know faster, lighter and even finds its way into NASCAR vehicles.

Corvette Plant Performance Improves

The Initial Quality Study (IQS) from JD Power and Associates was released this week. The Corvette had some great imprvoements. After reading a post from Rob at Corvette Action Center, he points out some key facts from the report for vehicles built in October 2005 (mind you data more recent is not yet available).

The Corvette, built at the Bowling Green Plant faired very well:

The Top 10 J.D. Power Problems in the study were:

Paint imperfection-blemish/dirt in paint: 2.9 PPH
Paint imperfection-uneven/runs: 2.9 PPH
Paint imperfection-chip/scratch at delivery: 2.9 PPH
Excessive brake dust: 2.9 PPH
Manual-difficult to get in gear: 2.5 PPH
Door panels-squeak/rattle: 2.5 PPH
Interior materials soils/scuffs too easily: 2.1 PPH
NAV system-map info miss/wrong directions/poor location: 1.7 PPH
Trunk/hatch/tailgate hard to open/close: 1.7 PPH
Brakes are noisy: 1.7 PPH

The IQS is a model-level study. It measures 212 symptoms across nine categories, including driving experience, engine and transmission, and a broad range of quality problems reported by vehicle owners.

Now mind you all of these numbers are based on people who bought or leased the 2006 model year Corvettes. They are surveyed 90 days after they take delivery and those numbers are used for these ratings. Great improvements continue to take the Corvette, and GM, higher in the Customer Satisfaction arena.
