IntelliChoice.com Announces Best Overall Values Of the Year

Each year, IntelliChoice.com analyzes nearly 1,800 models to find the leading automotive ownership cost and value in cars, trucks and SUVs. Their award, “Best Overall Value of the Year”, identifies for buyers the best-in-class vehicle that emphasizes the most value for your money over a five-year period of ownership. All factors are taken into consideration, including retained value, fuel, maintenance and repair, insurance, licensing and fees, etc.

Out of 31 vehicle classes and nine category winners, the Chevrolet Corvette was recognized as the BEST CAR VALUE OVER $24,000!  Another honor for Corvette, but certainly nothing new as Corvette continues its multi-year winning streak.

“One of the biggest things IntelliChoice.com emphasizes is that choosing a car wisely is not just about the lowest sticker price or even the lowest ownership costs,” said Charlie Vogelheim, executive editor of IntelliChoice.com. “The [award] recognizes cars and trucks whose total cost of ownership is significantly lower than expected compared to its peers.”

No need to keep looking for that perfect sports car, Corvette proves yet again to be a wonderful vehicle for a great value!

This favorite all-American sports ride has prospered through the years as GM continually changes and enhances its style, features and options to cater to consumer demands.

It’s quite remarkable to think back to when the first 300 Corvettes came off GM’s production line back in June of 1953… Check out a few of the minor modifications the Corvette has gone through during its 57 years of existence

You Be The Judge

TIME magazine recently published their “10 Most Exciting Vehicles of 2010”. The list, as most would agree, is quite despicable. Take a look and you’ll wonder how on earth some of these vehicles were even chosen.

1. Nissan 370Z
2. Caddy CTS Wagon
3. Ford SHO
4. Hyundai Genesis Coupe
5. Kia Soul
6. Mercedes E-Class
7. Suzuki Kizashi
8. VW Rabbit Golf
9. Jeep Grand Cherokee
10. Toyota Venza

TIME’s must have compiled this list to appeal to a different targeted readership. So, we decided to look further…

Earlier this week, Forbes’ published their “Ten Exciting Cars for 2010”.

1. Hyundai Equus
2. Ford Flex
3. BMW X5 M
4. Rolls-Royce Ghost
5. Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid
6. Fisker Karma
7. Porsche Panamera
8. BMW 5 Series GT
9. Chevrolet Volt
10. Audi R8 Spyder Quattro

Now, this list makes more sense to me, though we are a bit confused on why the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 didn’t make the cut…

Both lists are subjective, I guess. You be the judge.

Remembering September 11th

Remembering September 11thWe will never forget September 11th.  That morning.  Those people.  The heroes.  While the event isn't Corvette related at all, we still feel strongly that we should take a moment out of our day to remember and honor those who lost their lives, and those who came to the aid.

The Amarillo Area Corvette Club is honoring heroes in their community by visiting each fire station, police station and Veterans Hospital in Amarillo with their "American Freedom Corvette Rally".  If you're in or around Amarillo, they'd love to see you at Westgate Chevrolet today between 3pm and 5pm for a special service and then caravan to the stations.

We salute them for their efforts and the organization behind making sure people in their community feel appreciated and honored.

If your club is doing something special, let us know about it and we'll add it to our list.

Strategic Vision's 2009 Best Sports Car = Corvette!

Strategic Vision’s 2009 Total Quality Awards has named Chevrolet Corvette Coupe as best Sports Car. The reigning title is no surprise to Corvette after having received the same honorable title recently by JD Powers & Associates.

Strategic Vision’s survey responses entail more open-ended, opinionated substance answers. Instead of basing survey results on a high volume of consumer participation, Strategic Vision incorporates both the positive and negative phases of buying, owning and driving vehicles.

“The difference between products that generate consideration, build brands and increase sales versus those that do not is often how much delight and love the product generates with its consumers,” says Dr. Darrel Edwards, chairman of Strategic Vision.

As you can see, Corvette’s high score of 938 not only surpassed all vehicles in the “Premium Coupe” class BUT all other class winners within the ENTIRE survey!

A complete list of winners is available after the jump.

What American Car Could You Not Live Without?

2010 Corvette Grand SportYou may already know this question yourself. But to gain an overall perspective from others’ views, Hagerty Insurance, a leader in providing insurance for classic cars, asked their customers this very question.

Content of the question included situational analysis about the current economic times, GM and Chrysler bankruptcies, the end of Pontiac, and the potential future for both Hummer and Saturn.

“Now more than ever, American car manufacturers are the center focus of this economic decline,” exclaimed McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance. “As car enthusiasts, many of us would hate to see these cars become extinct. We appreciate the place in American society that a great car can occupy and the value of that car to future motorists down the road. It would be sad to see them go.”

With nearly 1,000 votes submitted, here are the results:

1. Chevrolet Corvette
2. Ford Mustang
3. Dodge Challenger
4. Chevrolet Camaro
5. Ford F-150
6. Cadillac CTS
7. Saturn Sky
8. Hummer
9. Dodge Ram
10. Chrysler 300

Once again, Chevrolet Corvette dominates the competition. Surprised? We want to hear from you. How would you rank your top 10?

ZR1 Chosen as a Top Ten World Performance Car of the Year

World Car of the Year AwardsThe Corvettes are back in business! Just recently, General Motors has resumed production on the 2009 Corvettes, focusing their attention on the popular ZR1

The Bowling Green assembly plant, home to where these beautiful machines are built, initially shut down for the few past months in an attempt to cut costs. Since a number of GM vehicles remain at a standstill on dealership lots, why produce more? GM has also taken action and decided to reduce costs by slowing down the rate of Corvette production. Now, instead of building 18.5 Corvettes each day, only 15 are produced daily.

The focus on Corvette production has been geared toward the ZR1… and with good reason! The ZR1 has recently been chosen as one of 2009’s top ten World Performance Cars of the Year. Over 50 international journalists nominate their top performance vehicles of choice for this award. Happily, the ZR1 was one of their top favs!

2009 World Performance Car finalists:

Audi RS 6 Avant
BMW 135i Coupe / Cabriolet
Corvette ZR1
Lamborghini LP560-4 Gallardo
Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG
Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG
Mitsubishi Evo X / MR
Nissan GT-R
Porsche 911 Carrera
Subaru Impreza WRX STI

To find out the TOP World Performance Car of the Year, stay tuned. See which of these ten vehicle candidates get cut down to number ONE! The results will be revealed on Thursday, April 9th at the New York International Auto Show.

ZR1: Clarkson's Car of the Year

Jeremy ClarksonJeremy Clarkson, an English journalist and broadcaster, is not afraid to speak his mind, which is often the public’s opinion too. With his specialty on motor vehicles, he is famous for his entertaining television show, Top Gear, as well as his witty weekly columns within the Sunday Times and The Sun.

This motor critic usually despises anything American made. However, he just recently broadcasted, “out of nowhere, my car of the year” is the Corvette ZR1! Though Clarkson thinks “it’s not built very well” and costs too much, he finds the vehicle “both docile and extraordinarily savage” as well as a great deal performance-wise.

He compares the generations of Corvettes in previous years to McDonald’s Big Mac. It’s “cheap, plastic and at the right time, and in the right place, sort of just what you want.” General Motors has indeed come quite a way with their development of the ZR1 beast. Though Clarkson sees the vehicle as an epic car, the current state of the automotive industry will likely affect Corvette’s production. Clarkson states, “I’m only sad that unless the health care and pensions company that makes it [Corvette ZR1] can be turned around, it will be the last of the breed.”

Consumer Reports Rates Z06 "Most Fun to Drive"

Corvette Z06: Most Fun to Drive!Consumer Reports, everyone's favorite independent rating organization, came out with their annual "American Top Picks" list.  The criteria to be on the list includes them having reliability data for the car, stability control must be available and the crash tests have to be decent.

With those criteria met, the Corvette Z06 was named Most Fun Car to Drive.  it beat out many other qualified American rivals, and Consumer Reports gives us an idea why (although in a rather negative tone).  They say:
Fun to drive: The Corvette Z06 is an awesome car, but Corvette reliability is well-below average. The CTS could also qualify here, but again, no reliability data. Going down the list, the Mustang GT lacks ESC; we don’t have reliability data on the Dodge Viper; and the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky have subpar reliability. The Dodge Charger R/T V8 is reliable and fast, but its overly light steering feel keeps it from being truly fun to drive.
Our only other complaint about the article is how it starts off.  The tone seems to be that they only come out with this list because people email and correspond with them that buying American is important and a decision factor for many.  It would seem to me that while the list is a great idea, buying American is an even better idea.  There's something to be said about being impartial and independent, but its something else to go dogging the industry that built this country.

What's your take?  Let us know.  And did we also mention, we have 5 Z06's in stock now at GMS Pricing?  Call or write us for more details.

Corvette Wins XM's Coolest Car Challenge

XM Radio LogoWhen I think of "cool" I think of Corvette.  So did the editors of Motor Trend.  They recently announced the 2008 Corvette C6 as the winner of The Editors' Coolest Car Challenge.

The Challenge asked readers of Motor Trend and Automobile Magazine to match their wits against the editors of the magazines.  They had a tournament bracket (like in College basketball) of 64 XM-equipped vehicles which were up against one another.  The readers were to try to guess which vehicle the editors would think was the cooler car.

But of course, the Corvette came out on top as the Coolest Car.  In a press release, Arthur St. Antoine (Editor at Large for Motor Trend) said, "Other rides have plenty of claim to the title of cool, but almost none of them can say they have been cool for as long as the Corvette...  It’s the original star-spangled two-seater, and it’s been turning heads for more than half a century. Race-bred suspension and road-hugging performance grace every model, and cool features abound. The Corvette silhouette is unmistakable.”

People who participated in the bracket had the opportunity to win a $10,000 grand prize towards the purchase of a Corvette.  A gentleman from Elk Grove, California ended up taking the prize.

Corvette Sting Ray: One of the 25 Most Beautiful Cars Ever

1963 Corvette Sting RayThe 25 Most Beautiful Cars Ever.  When you think about that statement, as I did before reading the story, you have to immediately think Corvette Sting Ray.  So did the editors of Automobile Magazine.  They've collected 25 of the most beautiful cars ever designed and you guessed it, the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray makes the list.

Here's what Automobile said about the Sting Ray, "The 1963 Corvette coupe, the Cindy Crawford of sports cars, would be just another fair fastback without its cleft rear window. GM design boss Bill Mitchell used the thin band of bodywork to sweep his signature windsplit from the top of the windshield to the tail--and to assert his dominance over Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, who hated it. (It was gone for '64.) The split rear glass was considered a radical design gesture in its day, but Corvette stylists experimented with even more extreme proposals. One sculpted in 1957 by Peter Brock, code-named the Q-Corvette, featured doors that hinged up and forward from a split windshield."

A big thank you to Automobile Magazine for featuring, and acknowledging, a classic piece of American history, the Sting Ray.

Corvette Z06 Named Tops in Resale Value

Kelley Blue Book (KBB) announced their 2008 Vehicle Residual Value Analysis.  Kelley is well known for being THE source for vehicle values for dealers and more recently for the public with their great online tools.  Every year they come out with their list of vehicles that retain  their value the best in a number of categories.  The analysis is based on 2008 vehicles only with projected values in five years.

This year, the 2008 Chevrolet Z06 comes in tops in the High Performance Car category.  This means that of all high performance cars out there, the Z06 is projected to retain its value the best.  Great news for Corvette owners looking to sell their Z06 down the line.

Here's what Kelley said about the Z06:  "Replace the standard Corvette's 430-horsepower V8 with a 505-horsepower V8---an engine hand-assembled by a single technician---and you've got what many consider the best of the best in American sports cars. The added power is managed by a reworked suspension that delivers improved handling with very little sacrifice in highway ride comfort."

Corvette Named 2008 All-Star

Automobile MagazineAutomobile Magazine recently announced their 2008 All-Star Awards.  Every year, the editors of the magazine test and evaluate cars that make the greatest impact.  They say These ten cars are the year's most exciting cars, our picks for the vehicles we'd most like to personally own in our dream garage."  This year's list includes the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette.

Here's what the editors say about the 2008 Vette:  "Evolutionary improvements keep the Vette in a class of its own. The revised 2008 edition does the 0-to-60-mph sprint in 4.3 seconds—with an automatic transmission. There are faster new cars than the Corvette, but all of them cost a lot more."

While the review could have been a little more complimentary (in my mind), at least the Corvette ranks as an All-Star as it should.

Other vehicles named to the All-Star list include the all new Chevy Malibu, Infinity G37/G35, Volvo C30, Mazda CX-9, Volkswagen GTI, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes Benz S Class, Lotus Elise, and the Porsche Boxster /Cayman.

The January 2008 issue of the magazine that includes the story on the 2008 All-Stars hits newsstands on December 4th.

Corvette Named One of Top Ten American Inventions

Thanks to a hot tip from Corvette Blogger, I just read an article that puts Corvette among the top ten.  AskMen.com just published an article sure to generate lots of debate, entitled "Top 10 All-American Inventions".

It is quite possible that no other living American would agree with their selections, but it certainly is profitable to consider what we each would list.  Consider their list after the jump.  As for myself, after an extremely pleasurable run to the recent Bloomington Gold Show in a Six-Speed Black 2001 C5 Corvette Convertible, I do believe the Corvette belongs on this top ten list!

Corvette One of Forbes' All-American Sports Cars

The recently retired automotive editor of Popular Mechanics, Don Chaikin, explains that if you look up "All-American sports car" in the dictionary, there's a picture of only one set of wheels.   "To me, it's the Corvette," he says. "The classic definition is, it's got to be front-engine, rear-wheel drive. It has to have a V8, and it has to have a true dual exhaust. It has to have two doors and two seats, and it can't be a sports coupe."

Forbes Magazine recently released their list of "ten all-American sports cars", and of course, Corvette is there.  Other GM products joining the Vette were 2009 Camaro, Cadillac XLR-V, Solstice GXP, Sky Red line.  The remaining five were: 2008 Challenger, Viper SRT10, Shelby GT, Saleen S7, and Panoz Esperante.  As Chaikin would demand, they are all convertibles.

Road & Travel Magazine Announces Sexiest Cars for 2007

Corvette has snagged another special recognition: named today as one of the world's "sexiest cars".  World & Travel Magazine (not to be confused with the more famous Road & Track Magazine) announced today the inclusion of Corvette on their list.

Martha Hindes wrote that, "Our adoration is for that unbridled, wind-in-the-hair ride, miles blazing by with blinding speed, seatback-plastering power that forces us rearward into yesterday at the surge of a floored, cast aluminum accelerator pedal, or the cat-grip control that bites through tenuous curves and switchback roads with absolute surety.  They catch our breath with the lithe lines of sculptured, molded steel, bright metal trims, the glare of high intensity jeweled headlamps and the heart-pounding rumble of a sweet exhaust tone.  These road rockets - the coupes, the roadsters, the musclebound ponies - are the sexy cars of our desire".

Special Collection at Bloomington Gold: 1957 Corvette

Given special attention in the display were several editions of the famous racing 1957 Airbox Corvette.  Several examples of the 43 that were built were present.  These cars were equipped with both (Regular Production Option) RPO684 which included the heavy duty brakes and suspension, and RPO579E, which included an airbox which increased horsepower by capturing cooler, higher density air, forcing it to the fuel injectors; and additional hosing ducts to cool the rear brakes to restrain the performance when necessary.  23 Airbox Vettes are known to survive today.

America's Everyday Supercar According to Popular Mechanics: Corvette Z06

Save yourself three minutes: read the final description of the Corvette Z06 below.

While enjoying the latest print edition of Popular Mechanics, I couldn't help but notice Ben Stewart's four way comparison of what he calls "the latest supercars".  These are the phrases (and clauses, if you want to be technical, which I usually do) that caught my attention describing the four supercars:

Viper SRT10 Coupe

There's nothing subtle about driving a Viper.
This hairy chested bruiser is louder and rowdier than anything else.
The gearshift knob is practically the size of a baseball.
This snake will bite.
This beast is a better weekend toy than an everyday supercar.

Corvettes Front and Center at Indianapolis 500

Other than in the actual competition Sunday, Corvettes are taking over the Indianapolis 500 this weekend!  Saturday’s lap around the track by 300 Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro owners is part of the celebration, in conjunction with the company’s role as the Official Pace Car of the 2007 Indianapolis 500.

According to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway website: “The premise for this program was to create an opportunity for our Corvette enthusiasts in the Indianapolis area to help us celebrate Chevrolet’s heritage pacing the Indianapolis 500,” said Terry Dolan, manager of Chevrolet Racing. “When our dealers approached five car clubs in the Indianapolis area about the idea, there was unanimous support. Our 300 spaces to participate filled up very quickly.”

In addition, television's "Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey will be driving the Corvette Pace Car on Sunday. Dempsey is considered a good selection not only for his star power, but because he is a co-owner of IndyCar Series and Indianapolis 500 team Vision Racing.

Automotive Streamlining Exhibit Overlooks Corvette

I have been fascinated with automotive streamlining for decades now, because automotive lines that split through the wind are usually beautiful lines. And certainly, a focus on smooth, wind pleasing curves has always been part of the Corvette mystique!

An impressive exhibit on automotive streamlining is currently available at the Phoenix Art Museum, though only through June 3. Enthusiasts can only hope that such an exhibit will travel to other parts of the world.

Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press published an insightful article on this creative genius yesterday.  Dunne has been rated higher in his influence in the automotive world than many better known names.

On his "most wanted photography" list currently: GM's upcoming rear-drive sedans and sportscars.

On "the hottest car in spy photography," he says: "Everybody loves the Corvette!"

An informative video of Dunne at work is available at the Freep On-Line.

Motor Trend currently is showing a video of Max Angelelli of Sun Trust Racing driving and commenting on Corvette Z06

Describing the Z06 as "a kind of monster," he says the great positive is that it has "a lot of power."  Balancing that, however, he says "you cannot use it ... all the time."

In summary: "This is a great balance between power, performance, and price; probably the best.  Z06 has probably the best value between performance and cost."

Readers of Edmunds Prefer Corvette in Best Convertible Category

Value may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you consider the 400-hp Chevrolet Corvette, but that's exactly what this classic roadster promises to bring to your garage.

Readers cast their votes for the best cars and trucks on sale for 2007 as part of Edmunds.com's 2007 Consumers' Most Wanted Vehicle Awards.

Chevy's singular drop top offers iconic good looks and world-class performance, all for a surprisingly affordable price. It's little wonder, then, that the Corvette was miles ahead of the competition in this race, with a staggering 50 percent of the vote. Porsche's graceful Boxster was a mere silhouette on the horizon with a distant 2nd-place finish with 20 percent, and it was followed closely by the redesigned BMW 3 Series, now a hardtop convertible at 17 percent. The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class (9 percent) and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class (5 percent) brought up the rear.
