The manufacturers of the C6 Corvette may sometimes speak of the body as being fiberglass, but technically is a composite material. The Corvette is the only vehicle that began in fiberglass in the early 1950′s, and continues to this day.
There is now a website devoted to the also-rans, the other vehicles whose bodies were built back in those days of fiberglass. The variety is much more than you might expect.
Hemmings recently did an article or two on the fiberglass phenomenon, and the website they featured, www.ForgottenFiberglass.com, provides a massive amount of information. Like me, you may remember one or two of these now classic cars, but there are so many others! Click the link to see what has gone on before.
And as I mentioned, the Corvette alone survives, and thrives! We know why.
